I just bought a 10" Pioneer free-air sub from a guy I work with, 100w rms and 350w max. The main problem that I see with finding a good place to mount it is that the sub is really deep.. ideas?
Normally, I would say the console. But only an 8" can fit there. Try the passenger footwell, underneath the dash. Or build a tall but slender box to go behind one of the seats so you can keep seat movement.
You could TRY the front trunk, but unless you cut a hole in the tub you won't hear much in the cab.
I see no reasonable way to mount a 10" free air subwoofer into a Fiero. A free air needs lots of dead space behind it to act as a box. For example, on cars that have a rear shelf in the back window. If you mount a free air sub there, the back of the sub is open to the trunk. That's what they're designed fo.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking... the guy I bought it from had two of them in a normal sized box, tho, and they sounded good. I'm probably just going to build a box to go behind the pass. seat, and if it doesn't sound good I'll just use it for my home stereo...
Last sunday I saw a nice SE with a 10" mounted under the passenger footwell, where the stock unit was. I didn't get a chance to hear it, but it looked nice. couldn't tell it was there unless you looked up under the dash, it was a very clean install.
and I'm not sure what kind of enclosure it was in, what kind of sub, etc.
i'm working on a design for 2 10" free air subs to go in a panel covering the back glass. you will lose some rear vision, but the thumps should look and sound cool. mounting depth is something like 5 or 7 inches total. has anyone ever tried this idea??

80's Boy, I have done this before with great sucuss. The box that I built covered the whole back window. I added plexiglass windows to the front & back of the box so I could see behind me. I had 2 10 inch Kenwood subs. The box fit so tight in its place that nothing was needed to keep it in place. Many of you might have read some of my previous post about building these boxes and selling them. Well now that the cat is out of the bag it looks like my plans will be cancelled. Everyone can easily build this box for under 75US. It does take some time to build. Each piece of the box is cut to fit in its position. The box is kinda shaped like a large rectangle that is wedged at the back. The fron piece is what is contoured to the inside moldings of the Fiero and leaves no caps. The look is PERFECT. I have never been stoped by the police concering my rear window being blocked off. I made sure the the rear window was tinted so they could not tell the I had something covering it. With the plexiglass windows reversing is not a problem. Visability is slightly redused but for the look this setup gives you it is acceptable to me.
I have a few pictures that I have drawn in Excel of my box. Different views. I don't have any measurements because it is built piece by piece and then put together to ensure a perfect fit and that no gaps are visable around the faceplate of the box.
If anyone would like I can fax them a copy of these pictures. I am not able to use picture post so just give me your fax number and I will send to you.
I also thought f just making a faceplate and installing free air subs as you mentioned 80's Boy. This would cut down on cost quite a bit. A faceplate should be able to be made for about 35US. I am not sure how good the sound would be. It would be quite hard to eliminate all the air leaks. with just a faceplate.
spike, i'm really glad to hear someone has done this!! please fax whatever you have to help me to 361-275-9908 asap! it sounds hard to do, but i have walled out an s-10 blazer minitruck before with 4 18" subs with great success. i know what i'm up against, but it is just so crowded in that car!! please help, and thanks again!!

spike--Even though the subs might not move under normal circumstances, what happens when you have a head on collision? My guess is you become decapitated. Kind of a gruesome thought, but you might think about doing something to secure them.
