Hiya... My 1986 SE 2M6 has had the cat replaced quite a few times and has accumulated a buildup of old pipe and amatueris welds.. i am looking into replacing the pipes- the muffler is 4 months old. could i concievably run with no muffler? that being pipe, cat, and tips? how loud would this be, how would it affect performance, mileage, would it be too loud, would it pass CA emissions? if its too loud, what could i do to silence it a little? i love the roar of my 2.8... isnt it wonderful? (BTW, i need to replace the cat again, and the pipes dont look like they can hold another weld)

My dad's 96 Dodge P/U with the 318 has the stock converter and then split into duals with no muffler and it sounds pretty good. You might want to use the resonator tips to quieten or mellow the tone a little bit.

Yeah, what Cooter said. I haven't heard a Fiero with a cat and no muffler, but I've listened to a V8 Monte Carlo SS with a similar setup and it sounded mean. Sounded like the old glass pack exhaust systems. Some people might think it's too loud others will think it's cool. Shouldn't hurt performance at all, might even improve it a tad, but probably not much. Don't know if CA will approve of it or not. If you decide it is too loud, reinstall a muffler again.

Could motorcycle baffles be used?...or maybe what is usually called a resonator from a muffler/resonator setup? They are somewhat smaller than a "muffler" but still act as somewhat of a silencer, don't they? JAT

well, would the v6's output be harmed by the lack of backpressure? oh, and any ideas if this would all pass CA smog requirements?

Lack of backpressure will give a more irregular burn at idle, increasing HC levels, but enogh to flunk emissions? Not likely. Unless the visual requires a muffler?
