Tom, Are the doors locked? If not, I'd simply disassemble the door panel, remove the lock, and have a locksmith or GM dealer make a new key. It should fit both the doors and the trunk. If the car had the remote trunk lock, it would be a simple as punching the switch on the upper right side of the drivers dash controls. (assuming the battery was good) If the owner is serious about selling the car, he could deduct the cost from the price.

If the car has the automatic deck lid switch and the battery is dead, get one of the cigarette lighter chargers, once you hook it up you should have enough power to pop the deck lid. Thought that was clever! Another friend lost keys but the car didn't have a motor in it. He went up into the engine compartment and removed the deck lid hinges and was able to lift it just enough to get a hand in and unbolt the latch. Other that that as WGRAFFIKS says, you might drive it to a lock smith and see what they will charge you to open it. I have found if you can take the lock to them, wheather in your hand or in the car, and you tell them how amazed you are with their talent, how they work magic, it gets cheeper all the time. Are you sure that a Dealer can make you keys from the VIN? Since VIN #'s are clearly visible from the exterior of the vehicle, I hope that isn't the case. If you are purchasing the vehicle from the original owner, he/she might have the original key "knockouts". With these any dealer can make you another set. I have also heard in the past that with a window sticker the original dealer can make additional sets, but I don't know if that is a fact.

I gave them the vin for my car and they made a set of door keys for it, most dealers want you to bring in some type of proof that it is your car ( title, insurance card, or state pinkslip).
I use the pontiac dealer by my house alot, so they know me.

The owner mentioned trying the dealer or removing the door lock but he is still lookinfor the key. I was just wondering if there was a way to trip the rear trunk, say from underneath. I'll look for a remote release but if it had one I'm sure the owner would have known. Maybe he doesn't know his car that well. And yes, he is going to knock $100 off if he can't find get a key.
Tom88GT Just being ME, I am a "SHOW ME" kind of guy. Guess that is because I was Born in Missouri. At least that is what I tell all the girls? and sometimes it works. OH, I thought I was on the other list! Anyway when trying to buy a car, it is usually worth more than $100 just to see the motor? Now STOP and think? When was the last time the oil was checked? changed? Is there something in there the seller doesn't want you to see? Maybe there is something not there? Just some words of CAUTION here! If you are getting one HELL of a deal, GO FOR IT! otherwise proceed with CAUTION!

The only way of getting the decklid off that I can think of would be to remove both the latch and the hinges. This would be damn near impossible with the engine in.
Sorry,

Called the owner yesterday. He had a key made by the dealer. I'll still look for the remote release because I'll want to use it. I agree that its worth more than $100 to inspect the engine but he is having some engine problems that he can't figure out. Sounds like a fuel injection problem. So he has cut the price in half anyway. So the car sounds like a good deal, key or no key. I haven't seen the car, just talked a bit. Will have time this weekend to see it and decide.
To add the remote trunk release you will need the switch, solonoid, and relay. I haven't added it to my car yet, so I'm not sure if thats all you'll need.
On the remote trunk release, the relay is not used as a power relay it acts as a safety devise so that you can't open the trunk without having the E-brake on or the engine stopped(on a stick anyway)
