Clockwise around the distributer looking from the top the wires are 1,3,4,2.
Facing the engine from the rear of the car
with the transmission on your left and the
pulleys on your right, the spark plugs are
numbered 1,2,3,4 from right to left. The
right-most one is 1 and the left-most one is
4. Your only problem is to figure out
which distributer wire is #1. I got this
information from the chilton repair manual
page 45. It's also on page 29 of the haynes
manual.

Good luck.

You're going to have to find top dead center for number 1 cylinder. Now that you know which one #1 is, take that plug out and the distributor cap off, then carefully bump the starter until the timing marks are lined up. The piston on #1 should be at the top. If not, rotate it one more turn until the timing marks line up again. What I usually do is put my finger tip over the spark plug hole as somebody bumps the starter at tiny bit at a time. You'll feel the compression (air will hiss out around your finger) as the cylinder come up on TDC. Now look to see which direction the rotor is pointing and determine which cap terminal that corresponds to. That's number 1 spark plug wire then. Voila!

quick check..... look on the dist cap for a number 1 mark. if the dist is properly installed that will work. Some have a mark some don't.((Sometimes people put them in wring durring service work and simple rotate the plug wires.))
