im getting ready to rebuild my 87 2.5 would like to know what i can do to make it snappier and also why can i find perf cams for 84 but nothing for a 87

I dont know what you can do for more performance from the iron duck, but the difference in cams is because the 84 used regular hydraulic flat lifters and the 87 uses roller lifters.

Keep in mind The 4cyl block is not very strong. Don't do anything that will increase compression more than a couple points or it's likely to break.

I'd skip the cam. Do a full port job on the intake, and clean up the exhaust. You'll find some pretty cheap power there.

If you are going to do major mods the block and head MUST be magnafluxed after it passes a Zyglo. These tests will find cracks in the block. the zyglo test looks for surface cracks, and will work on AL as well as cast iron parts, It's fast. The Magnaflux can find surface as well as internal cracks but it usually cost allot. If the thing has cracks zyglo can find, scrap it.
