I never had a problem with my gas guage untill today. I was driving down a smooth back road cruzing at 80. As i slowed down for a curve the gas guage needle wavered from Full to half and then went up to Full and stayed there. Its still there and hasnt moved. And i know the tank wasnt full. (infact i stopped for gas and it took 9 gallons to fill it up...).

Anyone know why it did this? Is this something easy to fix?

what would miles per gallon be under normall driving distances, So i can kinda watch the odometer to know when i gettng low on fuel.

I live out in the country and i dont do a lot of stop and go driving, mostly highway.

...your mileage may vary...

Ever hear those words, well they're true. My 4 cylinder Fiero gets over 300 miles to the tank full. To play it really safe, if I were you, I'd fill up about every 200 miles.

It could be the float in the tank or corsion on some of the connectors going to the gauge cluster. If you have an extra set of gauges, try swapping them.

likely shorted the wire to the sender. the wire is probly rubbed thru some place under the car. The tank shifts a bit in it's mounts. If the wire is tight/pinched the tank can wear thru the insulation.

batboy, your mileage is amazing! I have to fill up the V6 at 200 miles and the 4-banger at 240. Neither car will take more than 8.5 gallons, even though the 88 is supposed to have an 11.5 gallon tank.

I'll think i'll fill up around 150 miles just to be safe, and i'll check over the other things mentioned. Incidently, once my gas guage read 1/4 tank and then it stalled cause it was actualy out of gas. I read on the internet how to fix that problem, but required dropping the tank and i didnt want to do it if i didnt have to (guess maybe now i do?).

I got maybe a gallon of gas off some guy and it was enough to make it home. (i was only 2 miles away when it ran out).

The next day i drove to the gas station and it took about 11 gallons to fill up the tank. My fiero is a 87 GT.

ChadMan, I average about 32-34 mpg with my 4 cylinder, but nearly all my driving is on the open highway, most of which is posted 55 mph (I usually do about 60). If I'm driving 70-75 mph on the interstate or doing more city driving, obviously my mileage drops considerably.

Wow- i had this same problem and fixed it a month ago. The "sensor" in the tank was bad. It's a resistive element- or basically, a wire wound resistor attached to the float. The element had opened (the wire broke). I couldnt get the element; it's part of the fuel pump assy. and it's an all-or-nothing part, Im told. In a moment of brilliance, I repaired the element and reassembled it. I was so impressed with my fix that I started on a page to submit to my fave fiero web-hangouts;
