Long post, sorry.

Hi, I purchased an 87 5 spd fiero gt with 85k over the weekend, out of state. So, while I was driving home 1/3 of the way back I stopped off at a rest area, and while slowing down the clutch began to chatter. The previous owner had paperwork showing the clutch was replaced about 20,000 miles ago. I look into the manual and said it could be the mounts(engine and trans, goobed up or warped pressure plate, bad clutch sline, or burned clutch. The clutch felt fine once it's engaged, no burnt smell-so no burnt clutch. I've bled the master clutch cylinder but I still have to bleed the slave cylinder-possible cure? Pedal effort feels better, still chatters. I'm praying it's the mounts and not an old rear main seal leak or not a stipped clutch spline. Anyone experience this before. Your input would be greatly appreciated before I have to drop the whole rear cradle and open her up. Thanks.

I don't know why you're apologizing for a "long post". I've never felt the need to apologize for any of my posts, some of which are considerably longer than this one of yours.:)

Anyway, as I stated to you in the thread, "Clutch Info uncovered...", I've never experienced "clutch chatter". However, I am intrigued by your statement, "I've bled the master clutch cylinder but I still have to bleed the slave cylinder..." I'd be interested to hear how you could only bleed ONE part of the system. As far as I know, there is only one bleeder valve, and that is on the slave cylinder. Is your system different?

According to V8 archie, you have to bleed the slave by taking out the bleeder valve after youv bled the master then pushing the pushrod of the slave back in to get the air in the slave out. Then cap it back up and refill the resevoir.

Ya, we talked about that process in the other thread. There seems to be some debate as to whether or not it really helps or not. You'll never read about that method of bleeding the clutch in any Pontiac manual. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try it once and see what happens.

I get a problem with my 4cyl auto that feels like someone is kicking you in the back. I've isolated at least part of it to a problem similar to wheel hop. It's a problem that can cocur in any Fiero, or front wheel drive car.

many people know wheel hop as the wheels doing a spin/grab/spin/grab effect on leaf sprung rear wheel drive cars. This problem is cause by the springs winding up, then letting go, in a rather rapid oscilation.

The Fiero motors are prone to the same type thing caused by motor mounts, and posibly the cradel mounts. Under certain conditions the motor mounts wind up tight, and then release the stored energy to the car and drive train.

Part of the solution for Fiero is to make sure All motor mount hardware is in good shape. I'm not sure there is a complete solution.

Since this is a GT it is a V-6. The most likely cause for chatter while engaging/disengaging (and having no slipping while engaged) is oil leaking from the rear cam cover. This is a small round cover mounted to the rear of the block. It has no gasket, only RTV. They eventually leak and cause what is happening to your car. Mine does the same thing. Unfortunately the fix requires removing the engine.
Good luck,
Carroll
