Wow, guess I need to start reading more threads again (people are already b*tching to me over PM and email about how PFF needs moderators - yeah, right. Over-moderated mailing lists were the reason I created PFF in the first place). Anyway, thanks to a few people in this thread (you know who you are) who obviously can't enter a conversation without name-calling, this thread is now in the Trash Can. Nice going. Very, very nice first impression for all the members who joined PFF in the past few days because they were told at the 20th what a great forum this is.

I don't normally respond to anything in the Trash Can, but I think I need to in order to clear some things up about Ed's post. Ed, I don't remember you talking to me while I was working on the Scout, but a lot of people came over and chatted so you certainly may have. I was working on it because it had a severe oil leak on the valve cover, we wanted to leave pretty early Sunday, and I knew that on Saturday we'd be busy cleaning the car and getting it ready for the show. I knew no more about how the show was going to be run than you did. Period. MFC was in charge of the show and I didn't have any more information than you. However, I've been to about a dozen shows in the last year with the car. At EVERY one, the time the doors opened was not when the cars were judged. If you got there when the show started, you had time to do some cleaning, set up the display, get ready for the judges, etc. I assumed that's what was going to happen at the show. I didn't know they were going to have running lanes or anything else. I simply didn't know. I chose not to go to Milan, although I'd have liked to, because I needed to get the Scout ready to leave on Sunday. There are only so many hours in a day and that's how I used mine. Regardless, even assuming you were correct, how was that information an advantage to me? If anything, it gave you as much time as I had. I guess I don't understand your point. Chris and I know that it takes us about 2 hours to clean the car for show. We don't do it like a lot of the "show guys" do it, and our score reflected that. (For instance, there was some grease on the tie rod ends, etc., that the judge DID see and DID deduct for, rightfully so). Our car, like yours, is a regular driver and I don't pretend it's a show only car. I don't try to kill myself making it one on show day either. We just clean it up as well as we can and let the judges decide if it's good enough. I'm glad you had a good time at the show. After all our emails while building, it was fun to meet you and see your car. It's amazing how many things we did almost exactly alike, and how many were different. Many of the things you did I liked better than ours. Your trunk was a good example and I have every intention of stealing that idea from you! BTW, feel free to steal any ideas you have from ours as well. You see, I don't care if you do. I want you to have the nicest car you can, and have a good time working on it and driving it, just like we do. Anything else is just small potatos. John Stricker Kit Car/Re-Body Director CFOGi | | | quote | | Originally posted by Fino: I HAVE TO ASK, HONESTLY: Have you EVER been to a car show where people were just cleaning their cars and have the car torn down for cleaning during the complete show and then be judged at the end of the show? I cleaned my car on Friday and woke up early to wipe it clean at 6:10am before the show. I was told you could have your car judged at any time you like. One car that competed against me John Stricker is on the Personnel and is director of “Kit Car/Rebody for CFOGi”. I asked him on Friday why was he working on his tow car and not his show car. I can’t remember what he said but he didn’t tell me because he had all the time he needed to do that the day of the show. If John is representing CFOGi in the Kit Car/Rebody it would be nice to be told the ins and out’s of how the judging of Kit Car/Rebody would be done. I thought his position in CFOGi was to HELP members not to compete with knowledge learned from CFOGi against them. I have never been to a show that you remove your car from your show spot to drive somewhere else to be judged. I have had to drive my car through a check point where they would make sure it would run, turn, stop etc. (Detroit Autorama) then you proceed to your spot and clean your car. At the start of the show you stop cleaning your car and can be judged at any time from the start of the show to the end and you are not told when you are judged, just any time between the start and end of the show. You cannot cover your car at night or you will be disqualified.

Well I wasn't at the 20th ( ) But I have attended many shows over the last few years. As far as my opinion goes, the best "judging" I have seen at shows is peer judging. Hired judges tend to look at cars with blinders on. They don't look at the car as a whole. They tend to specifically look for defects and rate the cars low for them. Does anyone know if the hired judges really knew anything about Fiero's? If the hired judges were grading cars incorrectly (marking low numbers thinking this was actually rating them high) Then the judges obviously were all not on the same page. I was at one show where they had hired judges, They walked around to each car as a group. I got dinged for not having tire shine on my tires. Granted shiny tires look good, But I didn't spend all my hard earned cash on a stiff suspension and matched tires to spray them down with slick silicone. When I judge cars, I look at what has been done. These are 15-20 year old cars that many drive daily, Not a bunch of trailer queens. They need to be judged that way. Most hired judges are use to looking at professionally frame-up restored/customized cars. I really hope that this doesn't dampen anyones opinion of going other shows.------------------ Happiness isn't around the corner... Happiness IS the corner.

I prefer peer judging also. There is no way that, even if you have your own cheering section, you can tilt the vote in your favor, if your car does not deserve it. I think this is a more fair type of judging. I ask people what they don't like and like about my car. This way I can try to improve it, if I feel like doing so. We all put countless hours of work modifying and detailing our cars. I imagine that it really is a bitter pill to swallow if you show up at a show expecting to win and loose. I go to shows to show off my car and the work I have put in to it, and to see what others have done with theirs. My car is still a work in progress and probably will be for years to come. For this reason I don't expect to win anything, but would still like to know how I placed overall as a gauge to how well my work on the car is perceived. I would have loved to attend the 20th even with all of it's warts, it seemed like an awesome show.
