Smart A$$! Hahaha I have a rebuilt 2,000 mile engine I bought and drove 5 hours to go pick up. The ad was for a rebuilt crate engine, and that is exactly what I got. The alternator and A/C compressor were both shot, the back manifold had a crack in it, and the transmission was bad. However that was not discussed before hand, so it ultimately was my fault for not asking. I am not upset with the guy I got it from, exactly the opposite, as it is a 100% rebuilt engine, as my mechanic verified. I just put some new stuff on it, and it is good to go!

I was told it only needed a few bolts.

I priced a rebuilt 3.4 out of Michigan last year for 1200. Another 500 to make it complete seems easy enough. Why does everyone think a 1700 dollar long block is a steal? Sounds average at best. The filthy intake stuff ain't what the Fiero forum boys are about, however. A whole lot of miscommunication going on here.

The first mistake I see is buying a used engine without seeing it in person. Even then you run the risk of bad parts as some things don't immediatly show. For $1700, that should get you a decent shortblock. Heads can be $500 and up, additional used external parts like intake and exhaust maifolds probably another $700, accessory brackets and other items should be another $300. Do the math......

Sometimes in our excitement, we hear what we want to hear and that usually leads to a self induced disappointment.
