What have you been smoking? Subwoofers are in no way designed for stock stero systems...even the crappy little stock fiero sub has an amp!! I'm not exactly sure what you were trying to say before either....are you talking about the difference between max power rating and RMS?? If you are saying only overpowering a sub causes distortion you are wrong. Both underpowering and overpowering will cause distortion, with underpowering being the far more common of the two.

Underpowering a sub is very unhealthy... Think of it this way.. Not enough power, you turn it up to hear it better... It isn't the SUB that causes distortion. It is the lack of POWER from the head unit... When the amplifier reaches a certain volume level in the head unit, it passes a threshold efficient power output. Beyond the efficient level, it can put out a tad more power, but the sound is nowhere near as clean...
Compare it to revving up your engine...
At idle and higher RPMs, it sounds fine, even a bit throaty... You like the way it sounds when you rev it... Start getting closer to redline, and suddenly you can hear the valves. They sound loose, the engine sounds like it is screaming...
Eventually, you will kill the engine maintaining it at that RPM... Do the same for a sub, and it starts distorting. I have replaced, upgraded and repaired numerous sound systems in vehicles due to people underpowering their speakers...
Go buy a new car, one without a premium sound system (No premie means no amp) and turn it up. Notice the speakers start distorting? If you were to install a small amplifier in there, with a bit more power than the stock system, you would notice an improvement in sound, better quality, more volume, and definitely a tad more thump.... I am done ranting.
If you run your sub off of the meager power outputs of the stereo, you WILL burn up the sub, and chances are, you will overheat the deck and possibly blow an audio output IC...

I don't care how regulated any modern stereo is, 50watts powering a 350watt sub is going to distort it like mad. And don't you ever Email me ever again. Get your facts straight and maybe you'll get some respect. Looks like your a real a-s-set to this board........ <--- has repaired many "regulated" stereos due to incompetence. I am not flaming, I am just saying that the ICs tend to warm up due to the distortion. The impedance of the sub can change a lot due to distortion. Have you ever seen a voice coil on a sub that underwent distortion due to underpowering? The coil ends up scraping the inside of the guide, and eventually wears through. NOT a pretty sight. I suggest you do some more research on the effects of powering speakers with too little power, and distortion. Then, when you come back, we can discuss everything else like adults.
I have been doing car audio and electronics for way too long to believe in the "Regulated power supplies and MOSFET output circuitry will save my ass" theory.
