Self-moderating forum my ass. The trash can is ripe with examples of why at least OT needs moderators or needs to ban political and similar threads. Obviously, people can't be expected to behave themselves on the internet, the proof is right here. Most of the flame wars we have here could be diffused or ended by moderators who check the appropriate sections daily. Just look at how out of control some of these threads get before Cliff has a chance to send them to the can. Changing the ratings system to make it easier to ban green members isn't a solution either. The whole banning system is silly because a) it takes too long except in extreme cases and b) going straight to a ban is like beating your kid because they spilled a glass of milk - the most dire consequence is rarely the best first choice.
