Best 1000w microwave oven (Page 1/3)
cvxjet JAN 19, 10:45 PM
A year ago my microwave shorted out- I did some (quick) research and bought a cheap Black & Decker so I could at least eat (Warmed foods)

This new one is acting slightly odd now- So I really would like to buy a (relatively) quality microwave...Does anyone have any experience in this area? (Note; I refuse to buy Toshiba because of selling sub secrets back in the 80s)

Any assistance would be appreciated....

My Panasonic microwave must be over 30 years old... and still going strong.

Oh, looking for a radar range are ya?

I have no idea what brand mine is. A 2nd hand shop buy from years ago. A little noisy, big and kinda heavy & clunky compared to newer ones, but has been working good since I got it, around 2007.

Look at most food labels...
Many say something like "cooking time based on X watt MW unit" w/ X = 1100w.

That 1100w alone limits choice of models.
Then add many people don't have space to have bigger MW...

If you buy lower watt unit... many foods will have separate directions for say 700w or "warn" you need more time but Often that means 1.5 - 2 times or even more then directions on the box. Some foods say Do Not cook in smaller MW like large size "pot pies" & other larger foods because can't "reach" to food in the middle right & can allow food poison.

Many newer models have way more issues because totally change how magnetron gets powered.
Was very simple using heavy transformer now have "inverters" like Switching PSU for laptops & more using very light transformers to make ~ 2000vac to make the magnetron to make the microwaves. (Small ~ 3 turn coil is low volts just to heat the filament of the magnetron.)

As to "best" units for "home use" at general retail, most don't last long now including most High $ models. Worse w/ new "inverter" models because have a lot more electronics to run them.

Note: Some units Turn Off the magnetron first at end of time set. Some only when time is ≥ 5 min etc.
This is done so the Magnetron & more uses the fan to cool down better.
So Let the timer to run out before you open. If you skip this then expect the MW will have a very short life.

I use Oster mainly because they've been around for so many years making top notch products.

Over the years, I have used both Panasonic and GE microwaves. Several of them were microwave/convection capable and I still have one microwave/convection unit working. Of the two brands, I personally prefer Panasonic and believe it to be a more robust design. But that was then and this is now and most of the major brands are quite similar in functionality and durability.

One of the things I don't like about that B&D Microwave is that when the timer shuts it off, it beeps FIVE dang times..."beep...beep...beep...beep...beep" I only need one to two beeps- and you can't shut the sound off. So I have taken to pulling the door open to shut it off at 1 second....which, according to Patrick, is killing my "mikey" rapidly...

Long ago (late 90s thru 2010) I had a quality Mike that cooked well, and did not "***** " at me incessantly....But it finally died....Bought an Oster, which worked well, but when it finally died it shorted out and killed my house power.

It is really sad that all of these appliances are made in China- china's govt is BS and they tell biz-owners "promise anything- sales for short time then run!" My dog was given 3 toys from two different kids and she played with each just ONCE...and then was scratching and chewing for a week afterwards- nothing goes in my mouth (or my dog's) that is made in china. (Note; Chinese people in this country are GOOD; They are the ones who REJECTED corrupt chinese govt and left china)

Many MW & others w/ electronic controls have 5 dings @ end of time or keeps beeping in different ways. Mainly for people doing longer cooking that don't stand by the units.

You & others think China makes crap? Just wait for Communist Vietnam & other worse countries that are taking over to make stuff China recently did... Even Foxconn use by Dell Apple & others to make their products is moving to far worse places to keep profit level high. Foxconn started to move out &/or use more robots way before the "trade wars" started because higher China Labor Cost & other issues.

Most Clothing & related have move Many Decades ago & why Triangle Shirtwaist class disasters keep happened in 3rd world counties every few years w/ huge fires, building collapse, etc. If/When some place get new laws after one of these happens, owners just move to another place w/o labor protection & start again often in days.
How back? Example: 70's ILGWU ad Look for the Union Label was to fight moving the garment industry to China & other 3rd world & lower places.

I looked. My old dependable microwave is an Emerson.

I skirt the 5 ding thing by stopping the action (pushing the stop button x2 ) 1-2 seconds before it's done.
1 ding, and one ding only please.
