Before you click the link or read the quote, think for a minute about what you believe regarding cancel culture.
And now: the link.
And a quote:
quote | “I composed the words and music for a new aria, and the last two lines are, ‘God Bless America; God Damn America!’ They asked me to omit ‘Damn’. I refused. They fired me. Life in Black America.”
The aria was originally commissioned as part of Tulsa Opera’s ‘Greenwood Outcomes’ concert, which commemorates the Tulsa Race Massacre, also known as the ‘Greenwood Masacre’, which took place 100 years ago. |

I view cancel culture (and lefties, by association) as a personal attack on my freedom.
I WILL defend myself.

So, you blame the left for canceling the opera and believe that it should have been performed as written?

Yup
Anybody offended by it (or ONE single word) isnt being forced to attend or watch it.
OTOH, be glad I'm not a libby or the entire CONCEPT of "opera" would cancelled altogether !!!
Sheet, I'd rather go to a root canal ! (I heard something similar to opera once. Just after a car crash, poor bastards all burned alive and that was the sound !!!!~ ) [This message has been edited by MidEngineManiac (edited 03-24-2021).]

Didn't fire him. The performer he was asked to create the aria for simply didn't accept his work, which was her option as she would have been the personal identity mostly attached to the work. Can't blame her for that. Few remember or pay attention to who writes segments or versions of any given performance but almost everyone remembers who performs it.
I apologize for posting that...........[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 03-24-2021).]

Yes, and that is sometimes the case for stories that are reported as "cancel culture". In addition, I chose this story because the controversial phrase is usually associated with left wing ideology.
This is not the left canceling conservative free speech.

I dunno....I see it differently.
They had NO issue with the entire work, all the guys effort, the end product...Just the word "damn"
To me, that brings to mind frothing-at-the-mouth feminazis that they hate the word "****" or liberals saying you are white so you cant say "******"
The WHOLE thing is not just censorship it social-engineering (and control) at its worst. If you can manage to remove a word and change it to something else, then you have, in the long run, changed the thinking and entire concept behind the word.
They were OK with "God Bless America" but "God Damn America" was a problem....evidently the words/concepts of "God" and "America" are no problem, and niether is "Bless"...but "Damn" (condemnation) is.....thought control. You will NOT criticize or complain and WILL goose-step in line and WILL show full left-flag-waving approval. Zero tolerance for dissent.
Nazi's, Commies, Lib's, Dems....same sheet different diaper. They all want the power of censorship and thought-control[This message has been edited by MidEngineManiac (edited 03-24-2021).]

So who has control over an artistic performance? The creator, the performer, the theater, the production company, the audience, the government? Can one require that the other violate a principle?
