I just got through re-watching the 1936 film "The Petrified Forest". What a great movie! The political and social undertones are oddly relevant in today's America. I wouldn't characterize it as having a message, but along with bits of humor, there are comments on class distinction, racism, patriotism and capitalism.
Seven years after completing this movie, Leslie Howard was killed when the commercial flight he was on was shot down over the Atlantic by the the Luftwaffe.

That really is a fine film. Having seen Mr. Howard in some other films is when I came to appreciate his talent. His character in It's Love I'm After is truly hilarious (a married film star pursued by a fan) and who can top his performances in The Scarlet Pimpernel and Pimpernel Smith?
