Just watched this shortened version of Dr. King's speech at the Lincoln Memorial. We shall not see his like again I think.

Kind of silly, I know... but I really don't like his memorial that they built for him at the National Mall. It's not that it looks bad or anything, but it was made in China. Literally made in China and then shipped over here. It speaks volumes of where we've gone as a country, that we couldn't even source the stone for one of our own monuments from our own mountains.

I like the idea behind the design: the stone of hope carved from the mountain of despair, a beautiful vision chosen right from Dr. King's own words. But picking a sculptor from China to execute the design and stone from China carve it from? That's too much Globalism for my taste (but perhaps this kind of deal is behind much more than we will ever know.)

Where was the Statue of Liberty made and shipped from ? (Also kind of silly on my part.)

Do I remember correctly the San Francisco was made with China materials ?

The Statue of Liberty was made in France as a gift from the Citizens of France to the Citizens of the United States, celebrating the centennial of the Revolutionary War and France's unique role in it. So not really the same thing as a US-sponsored memorial for siting in DC made with materials and labor from China.

For San Francisco you might be thinking of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridge. This public work I believe used precast sections made in China which created a wealth of controversy at the time and continues to live on in worries about quality. Here's a link to one story I could fish up quickly but perhaps a native can tell us more ... Dang: The Chinese-Made Bay Bridge Continues to Fall Apart

I recall at about the same time passing on a local interstate here a line of trucks hauling pylons for wind turbines from the port of San Diego up north somewhere. The open ends of the bases were covered in giant vinyl caps emblazoned with the phrase 'MADE IN CHINA' on each one. I thought at the time that hauling huge pylons consisting of mostly open air-space across the ocean couldn't possibly be less expensive than building them in the US, but who knows
