NOT a modern 'black' rifle. I am looking for something much older. Already have an SKS, a true M-14 is more than I want to pay, a mini-14 is not something I'm interested in and not crazy about a Mosi.
Something along the lines of the Swiss Schmidt-Rubin Model 1896/11, K31 or Mausers, tho the cost of ammo for the swiss rifles is pretty high, I don't intend to be firing a lot of ammo anyway. (I would like to know what it's like to fire a rifle with a full 30 in barrel and 4' overall length tho) Suggestions welcome. CHEAP is important!

I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a Mauser when they were so inexpensive several years ago.
The Ruger American line of bolt action rifles is tempting me now.

The 03-A3 isn't priced horribly high. But above that price point is the Garand and can be had in the 850-1000. You can rebarrel it to a .308 too. The AK in .30 cal. is effective.

Not to be rude, but good luck!
Currently, the only cheap firearm is a broken one. Prices on guns & ammo are nuts, thanks to the Covid craze. Now that a gun-grabber has been elected President, that will likely continue another 4 years.
EDIT: Wish I would've picked up a Schmidt-Rubin back when they were $300. From what I hear, it's a damn good rifle.[This message has been edited by Blacktree (edited 01-05-2021).]

The American would be hard to beat but, I don't need another modern ranch rifle.

Yeah, I know. Around 2010, I was in a little gunshop about 3 miles from my house and he had a rack of surplus military stuff each under $500. A variety. He also had several wooden boxes with cosmo'd rifles inside for $225. I wasn't interested in any of it at that time and the guy has since died and his shop closed down. Kickin my self now.

Hard to beat a Mosin for what you want.

I wanted one, until I used one. I've used a Mosin, here on my property. Funky bolt, ridiculous safety, sights marked in 28" (arshin) x100 graduations. Not impressed and everybody and their brother owns one. I want something 'different'.
