Outside the box idea from Japan for reducing the amount of space 'junk' in orbit. (Page 1/1)

Construct the outside enclosures of earth orbiting satellites from wood.

Not just any wood. Sumitomo Forestry, part of the Sumitomo Group, which was started more than 400 years ago, says it has an R&D secret to create wood constructions that are highly resistant to temperature extremes and sunlight.

The thinking is that wood-enclosed satellites which reach the end of their service life in orbit or malfunction in orbit could be allowed to plunge back to earth, mostly burning up in the atmosphere in a relatively benign way, compared to the satellites that are commonplace today.

Sumitomo, which is collaborating on this with Kyoto University, has set a target date of 2023 for testing the first such satellites.

Plywood to the moon,
build a ship with wooden spars.
Let me see what spruce acts like
on Jupiter and Mars.
With redwood 2x2’s
and other woods
please use screws.

Is just PR Hype
Case is the least of things that can be dangerous to environment and people.
Is why you never touch space "junk" just hitting ground like many stole waste from shuttle crash took a huge risk of poisoning themselves and others. Many fuel tanks survive a crash and very toxic even thin coat on cash parts will make you very sick or dead.

The space claw. Grabs the space junk and hurls it towards Earth to burn up.
