Novavax’s investigational vaccine, NVX-CoV2373, is made from a stabilized form of the coronavirus spike protein using the company’s recombinant protein nanoparticle technology. The purified protein antigens in the vaccine cannot replicate and cannot cause COVID-19. The vaccine also contains a proprietary adjuvant, MatrixM™. Adjuvants are additives that enhance desired immune system responses to vaccine. NVX-CoV2373 is administered in liquid form and can be stored, handled and distributed at above-freezing temperatures (35° to 46°F). A single vaccine dose contains 5 micrograms (mcg) of protein and 50 mcg of adjuvant.

Novavax has signed supply agreements with several countries and is set to provide 60 million doses to the UK, where a late-stage study is under way. The interim data from the trial is expected in the first quarter of 2021.

It is also preparing to deliver 100 million doses to the United States by January after it was awarded $1.6 billion for developing and testing its potential vaccine.

This is a 6-minute on-air interview from MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports."

Dr Peter Hotez touches on three topics.
  1. Initial vaccine rollout in the U.S. (cautiously optimistic)
  2. Demographic inequalities in vaccine availability (concerned)
  3. Awareness and monitoring of Covid virus mutations (U.S. doing very little, compared to the U.K. and Australia)

Dr Hotez ends the interview, saying that it wouldn't surprise him to learn (eventually) that mutated strains of the virus are talking hold in the U.S. that are "home grown"--not imported from the U.K., South Africa or any other country.

So far, there's been an air of cautious optimism in the mainstream media that the already known mutated strains of the virus are not going to prove to be resistant to the vaccines, but the more the virus spreads and mutates, the more that concern moves to the foreground.
