Irony in modern times (Page 1/4)

I'm pretty sure we have each seen some ironic situations recently.

Here is a place to share what we have observed.

The serial pan-handler leaving his free-loading outpost stopping at the convenience store to buy scratch off lottery tickets with money scammed off of stupid people driving by.

Not a big thing, and for many and perhaps all but a few on this forum, hardly a "thing" at all, but look at the NFL.

They were the Oakland Raiders, but now they're the Las Vegas Raiders, and this was the first season of Raiders home games in their newly opened Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers share a home field in the newly opened SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles. Two brand new "cathedrals" of NFL stadium architecture with all the latest innovations. At Allegiant Stadium, they maintain the playing field with its sod and grass in large beds outside of the stadium, directly in sunlight, which is better for the grass, and just before the games, the beds, which are on a track system, slide inside the stadium where the afternoon light is more diffuse.

So the first games are played without any (hardly) any fans in attendance because of the Covid pandemic. Now they are allowing fans to attend in carefully limited numbers, but the two brand new stadiums are far from being filled to capacity. All the NFL stadiums. With so few fans at the stadiums, the noise level across the playing fields are much reduced, and people who watch the game broadcasts on TV can hear the signal calling of the quarterbacks very clearly, as never before.

Is that ironic, or what?

"Richard Engel, master of irony."

Richard Engel has been NBC News chief foreign correspondent since 2008.

I was thinking about what I could come up with, related to "irony", and something he said earlier this year came to mind. He was reporting on the Covid pandemic early on, in the spring of 2020, when it was really bad in Italy. He was reporting from one of Italy's hardest-hit regions, and talking about the people:

quote
A few weeks ago they'd never heard of Covid. Now they hear of little else.

From the same video report, another "Engel-ism."

quote
Then Covid found a new victim: the world economy.

That's "summing it up."

It is and always was free, but also always had and still can/does carry consequences.
Alexander Hamilton, 1804 I believe, publicly said some pretty (for that era anyway) damning things about Vice-President Aaron Burr. 'Dispicable and untrustworthy" among them.
Burr demanded an apology and Hamilton refused, no doubt, or at least 'perhaps' in his mind secure that his speech was 'free'. (the 1st amendment having been added and ratified in 1791) The infamous Burr/Hamilton duel ensued and Hamilton was killed by Burr.

Choices.
Consequences.

Is that really true ?
Do you believe that ?
I do.
It doesn't just apply to speech.

Obviously he had not, tho he may as well have been.

"“History obliterates. And every picture it paints, it paints me in all my mistakes. When Alexander aimed at the sky he may have been the first one to die, but I’m the one who paid for it. I survived but I paid for it.”"
