WTH? I run some for-sale ads online and frequently get that question. But there's a price listed for the item and they're asking for even less...without offering anything. They really want me to negotiate myself down with myself when that's their job?
What would your response be? Because even if I have a price in mind, stating it just invites the person to use that as the new asking price he can offer even less. Likewise agreeing to a lower price online has been problematic. After agreeing to a price they often disappear but then probably use a different email to offer a lower price than that.

Happens a lot. Best to be cool about. I usually restate my asking price and say I could take "x" amount less.
"I am asking $110, but I will take an even $100 for it."

My general response doesn't seem to work even at 50% of the time. It's been, "I'd listen to offers on it. And can meet up for you to take a look at it. Thank you." Usually there's no further response.

I usually tell folks to make me an offer I can't refuse. My price stays the same unless they come up with a reasonable offer.

I typically just reassert my asking price and add "if someone were here with cash id be willing to negotiate." Then its fun to watch them figure out what that means
<Rant>
There's also now theses awful selling platforms like Offerup and people post things and never respond. I had inquired about a Fiero and a few different Camaros on there. I heard nothing back about the Fiero so i figured it had been posted a few weeks its gone. So i inquired about some camaros they all had variance in post age. One had been posted 10 months i had inquired mostly to maybe prompt someone to take it down. 3 weeks later i hear back about the Fiero but by then i had picked up 5 in 3 weeks and was full up. Then the guy started taking himself down. He had this car posted for like 1500 and after i told him " sorry no longer interested i have already bought 5 in 3 weeks" the 8th time he was at $300. Then a week after that (so about a month) the 10 month Camaro post gets back to me with an offer $200 less than the post. So I guess people typically seem to just automatically talk themselves down and if you are not one people try to prompt you like you forgot. (Im the best negotiator ever! But this guy has not talked himself down yet better remind him) probably stems from the self entitlement issues in our society. This is all part of why i hate selling things. I hadn't really sold much until the last couple of years because i just don't like dealing with people. </Rant>

I was looking for the "Bad Salesman" scene from "Ruthless People" with Danny DeVito, but couldn't find it. This works.
My response would be "I won't go lower than (price in the ad) You can pay more if you want to."

Unless the ad states that the price is firm, I figure there's room for negotiation. I always ask the seller (dealer or private) what their best price is. Sometimes, I make a counteroffer but not always. Most people ask more than they're willing to take. I might want $100 for an item but I'll ask $125 expecting a buyer to talk me down some. I feel like I'm getting what I want and the buyer feels like he/she is getting a bargain. As far as who asks for a better price, it doesn't matter.

With private treatly calf sales, my response is $50-$100 above what my original asking price was, but I don't very often sell private. I don't have much time for tire kickers. I make an exception for 4h/FFA kids tho.[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 12-23-2020).]

My main motive when selling stuff is to get it gone. I always put obo at the end of the asking price.

I never sell anything. I either give it away or donate it. If I buy something, I usually just pay asking price. I have never been driven by money. Money is a tool, not a measure.
