Has Anyone Here Tried A Weighted Blanket? (Page 1/2) |

When I was a kid I used to sleep pretty-good with a ratty-old quilt my Grandma gave me. It weighed a ton. I recently found out you can buy Weighted Blankets.
For the uninformed:
Weighted blankets are similar to a duvet or comforter, but made up of compartments filled with glass beads or plastic pellets instead of down or fiberfill to provide even weight throughout. Weighted Blankets take advantage of the body's "deep pressure touch" (also called deep pressure stimulation).
Deep pressure touch can take many forms, including swaddling (for babies), massage, hugs and pressure evenly applied to your body. It's been shown to reduce cortisol, the hormone our bodies release when stressed, and increase dopamine, serotonin and melatonin hormones that promote relaxation, regulate our mood and signal our brains that it's time to sleep. It is also said to trigger our parasympathetic nervous system, which puts our body into a state of relaxation. It's the exact opposite of the sympathetic nervous system, where our bodies go into the "fight or flight" state.
Reported benefits include relief from insomnia, restless leg syndrome, anxiety, PTSD and used as a soothing calmitive for children affected by ADHD.
I'm getting ready to try one out. They sell them in varying weights in relation to (10% of your own) body-weight, the heaviest blankets weighing 25 pounds.
QUESTION: If the whole blanket weighs 25 pounds, then theoretically you are only under approximately half the blanket at any given time, which means you are only laying under 12 pounds of weight? If so, that means you would have to fold the blanket in half and double it's thickness to get the actual 25 pounds laying on you, as advertised?
That means either buying a blanket twice the size of your bed, or buying 2 blankets. I need the whole 25 pounds.

P.S. That's the most i've ever written the words "weight" & "blanket" in one setting... [This message has been edited by Boondawg (edited 12-04-2020).]

I kinda have, but we called them heavyweight or winter quilts. I had an uncle that was always cold even under a heavy blanket or quilt and he went and bought a piece of carpet and put it over the quilt.
A good pair of PJs is a lot cheaper than a quilt or weighted blanket tho.

A lot of girls like to put a lot of blankets and sheets on their bed. I can't stand it, almost to the point of a phobia. I hate the feeling of being confined or restrained. I am a peaceful guy, but if you try to hold my arms down, I will come out swinging.

Rather that a weighted blanket, I prefer a petite girlfriend, preferably a redhead.

You wouldn't need (or want) the extra weight on Jupiter.
That's my thinking.
The perception of weight is a consequence of gravity, which may (or may not) eventually be understood by scientific consensus as arising within the four corners of a theory of Loop Quantum Gravity or LQG. Which should (hopefully) not ever be confused with LQBT, which has been somewhat interchangeable with LGBT. Right now, I could do with a BLT, or even better, a BLAT.[This message has been edited by rinselberg (edited 12-04-2020).]

Negative. But I have trained my body to release serotonin and dopamine in place of Cortisol during stressful situations because I find stressful situations to be relaxing and very satisfying.

I've thought about those but I can't sleep with my feet covered by anything more than a sheet. I just get too hot. Not sure I'd want a thick blanket/comforter doubled up on top of me so I passed. Let us know if it works for you.
