It is a similar story to catacombs of Paris where the gasses and wax of the dead would bubble to the surface due to nitrogen spikes bloating and floating everything to the surface. To fix the problem of mass graves they dragged the bodies into the caves of catacombs and let them decompose in there instead of the mass trench graves.
