An original 15th century wood carving in El Ranadoiro, a hamlet in the northern Spain:

A painting titled Immaculate Conception. These are just the upper part of a larger painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murill..mid-late 1600s.

Another wooden statue restoration attempt, carried out (reportedly) by a local handicraft teacher. Sanded off the original paint, and then repainted it in her own hand. Europeans likened the results to a cartoon character Tintin. It has since been better restored courtesy of a grant.
Here are the original, the botched restoration and the unrestoration, which costs around $35,000 USD.

and our northern neighbor had it's own experience in whimsical looking restorations. I call this one 'frilled Yoda"

Reminds me more of baby Maggie... and/or her artwork.

Just a note on that statue... it's had its original head returned, although IMO it's rather ugly as well.

I remember this first one... it was so... sooooo bad.

If I remember correctly, it was a nice old lady who attempted to restore it, but it was so horrendous, haha... she felt really, really bad too if I remember correctly.
