Still new as museums go--it opened in 2018 after six years of planning and construction--the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio, focuses on the lives and stories of veterans themselves, instead of the wars in which so many of them served.

The museum's installations indicate that it is neither a war memorial nor a military museum. It is a space dedicated to the stories and experiences of all veterans. Theodore Roosevelt, a war hero, is in the museum, right next to someone you can't find in a history book.

African American, Hispanic, Asian, men, women, poor, rich, famous politicians and virtually unknown people from every era -- from the Revolutionary War to the war in Afghanistan -- are represented and honored here.

Just something I chanced upon.

Strikes me as a novel and innovative approach to military and veterans-focused museum'ing, although not totally unprecedented or unique.

Free haircuts for Vets at Great Clips too.

I don't need a haircut right now but stopped by and they gave me a card to use later.

You are right though, Veterans Day is being commercialized
