Still new as museums go--it opened in 2018 after six years of planning and construction--the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio, focuses on the lives and stories of veterans themselves, instead of the wars in which so many of them served.
quote | The museum's installations indicate that it is neither a war memorial nor a military museum. It is a space dedicated to the stories and experiences of all veterans. Theodore Roosevelt, a war hero, is in the museum, right next to someone you can't find in a history book.
African American, Hispanic, Asian, men, women, poor, rich, famous politicians and virtually unknown people from every era -- from the Revolutionary War to the war in Afghanistan -- are represented and honored here. |

Just something I chanced upon.
Strikes me as a novel and innovative approach to military and veterans-focused museum'ing, although not totally unprecedented or unique.

Free haircuts for Vets at Great Clips too.
I don't need a haircut right now but stopped by and they gave me a card to use later.
You are right though, Veterans Day is being commercialized
