What was your Mom's favorite type of music/bands/songs?
My Mom was Elton John, Phoebe Snow, Cat Stevens, Aretha Franklin, Carly Simon, Johnny Rivers, etc.

My Dad?
Mostly the sound of his foot being planted firmly in my azz!

Talk radio. 900 CHML.

I don't think she turned the dial once in 50 years.

Age and location of upbringing will make a huge difference in what music our respective moms enjoyed. My mom was born (in 1919) and raised on the family farm in Prince Edward Island. I remember she enjoyed watching Don Messer's Jubilee on CBC TV. For her, I'm sure the music brought back memories of home, memories of family. And for me, it brings back memories of her.

My mother played boogie woogie and swing on the piano.

These were a couple of her favorite songs:

My grandfather played country.

My father did not play an instrument but listened to classical music, a lot of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.

My mom has been a huge Eagles fan, as long as I can remember. She was also a Blondie fan (probably because that was her nickname).

I don't even think my mom likes music. I think she'd even think it was weird to have a radio playing music in the background; after all, if you're not listening to the news or the weather or the school closings, you might as well just leave it turned off!

My dad though was a big classical music buff. He had countless recordings on reel-to-reel tape, and then eventually transitioned to cassette format (he used to get LP records from the library and record them, bonus points if it was from a brand-new record that had never been played). Unfortunately I don't think the tapes have really held up well after all the years stored in the basement.
