Rhode Island is officially the "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."
Question 1 on the Rhode Island statewide ballot is whether or not to change it to the "State of Rhode Island."
Lauren Dezenski for CNN; November 1, 2020. https://www.cnn.com/2020/11...-question/index.html
| quote | Although Rhode Island passed a law in 1652 banning African slavery, it was never enforced and the state later "played a leading role in the transatlantic slave trade," according to the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University in Providence.
Rhode Islanders had more enslaved people "per capita than any other New England state," according to the John Carter Brown Library, including on plantations in South County, and they enslaved Africans and Native Americans.
"Between the transatlantic slave trade and the West Indian provisioning trade, it is hard to imagine any eighteenth century Rhode Islander whose livelihood was not entangled, directly or indirectly, with slavery," according to the Brown University Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice's 2007 report on the university's historical ties to slavery and the slave trade. |

Odds are, you're not a resident of Rhode Island, so these For and Against arguments on Question 1 are academic.
But you could be in the mood for some mental gymnastics. Flexing those neurons. What if you could vote on this question?

Most states don't need to vote to "change names" AKA change to logo/slogan/tag-line. NJ DE and others have done this several times costing a lot of $ each time to change road signs etc.
Is funny DE loves "Home of Tax-Free Shopping" slogan ignoring out of state buyers are often still require to pay for home state or even city sales tax. NYC is especially good at charging w/ tax dodging w/ NY residents reporting each others.
I love 101.5 radio w/ suggestions for NJ slogan earlier this year... https://nj1015.com/what-is-...erseys-state-slogan/------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)
