Anyone play "Ping Pong" otherwise known as Table Tennis? (Page 1/3)

I now have this fairly large "bonus" room above my garage. I have my big screen, a great sound system and some pretty nice seating for watching different sports, movies or whatever. There's still a large open space I want to put a ping pong table in. A regulation table is 5 foot by 9 foot. Obviously, a 4X8 sheet of plywood won't make a regulation table. I've been looking at regulation tables but damn, they are expensive for a decent one. I used to really enjoy playing, I'm much older now and doubt I have the reaction time/skills to beat very many folks but, wanted to challenge each and every one of you to bring it on.

Any one else play?

Thought I'd give us something else to talk about besides politics and ugly Canadian Ducklings.

You can buy sheets of mdf in 5x10 (and even larger. )
And No, Forrest, I do not play ping pong.

Hey Bubba, let's cool it with the name calling.....
We all know how you feel about trees.
I'll have to look at that MDF, as I remember it doesn't have a perfectly flat surface. Deviations will cause the ball to not bounce true.
Something that's very important to those with "professional" skills.

I want to get back into playing myself. I am going to put on my cement slab / basketball court in the back yard and throw a tarp over it when not in use. They come up for free frequently on Craigslist. Some of them really nice.

I used to be quite the table tennis champ in my younger days (like 30 years ago). Still have a paddle that was top of the line, almost competition grade although it's probably way behind the times. We even had a table tennis table in school we'd play on @ lunch. Even had those totally rad paddles with the sandpaper. If I had the room, I'd buy a table just to get some good exercise.

Well, as I said previously, I have the room above my garage. The room is 30 by 38 feet. So, there is room for several tables.
While I could always use the exercise, it's mostly for entertainment. I just like playing.

MDF generally has a good smooth side and a not-so-good side. Depends which grade you get. I cut thousands of sheets of it in my job out in San Angelo over the course of about 8 years. You would want a minimum of 3/4 thickness but a lot of what I cut was 1 1/2" . For a 5 x 10 sheet, youwould probably have to order it as it's not something Lowes or The Home Depot would normally carry. It is going to be HEAVY!
Another option is to overlay a sheet of quality material with a laminate, but make sure you do the back side with paper backer. If you don't, the one side with the laminate glued to it will warp or concave if it isn't of sufficient thickness.
Not being the athletic type...and you being a former cowboy.....my idea of a ping pong thing...

Maybe I'm not thinking about this right, Don. When I think of "laminate", I think of something super smooth like a countertop. Table tennis tables aren't smooth. I think raw MDF (the smooth side) would be just about right. You need just a bit of "grit" for spin.

Yep, spin is very important in Ping Pong, the news and in politics.
