Aha! I know what that thing on the bass is. It is called a "C" extension and extends the length of the E string down to a C. The small levers act to stop the string in half tone increments, much like a capo on a guitar, back up to E.

Performances that I like... check. Heartfelt... maybe. Powerful... only the power to refresh.
This is what happens when the Beatles are reinterpreted by a club-style jazz quartet.

There are already a LOT of truly great songs on this list. I listen to a lot of music - everything from Elvis and Patsy Cline to Cheap Trick to Fall Out Boy - pretty much every genre except rap and hip-hop. So it's tough for me to just list one or two. But while I reserve the right to post to this thread again, for now I'll restrain myself and just list a few. This post I'm going for a couple of songs I think are a bit lesser known so they're new to at least some:
Harry Chapin - Mr. Tanner www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo-...st=RDfo-tCNtFI10&t=4
Lady Antebellum - Hello World www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1BjnJe67JI
Sara Evans - Words www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpSibg1pvQc
I promised restraint, so that should be enough for now, but I gotta add the one I blast on occasion, but especially on Independence Day:
Rodney Atkins - It's America www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZBrBJseyv0
Way too many more to list here.

Ditto. My collection of digital media (music, movies, print) is becoming quite the storage problem. I just topped 6 terabytes. And that doesn't include computer programs, games, etc. I shudder to think what a 10 terabyte drive is gonna' cost...

I would call this a very "powerful" recording in the Jazz genre. I'm not sure how to pin it down more narrowly in a way that would be accepted by the serious scholars and students of Jazz. "Quasi-orchestral studio recording jazz"..? Whatever.
If someone were to task me with the selection of a single recording that is representative of the entire genre of "Jazz", for transmission to an Extra Terrestrial civilization--like the made-of-gold phonograph records that were affixed to the NASA Voyager 1 and 2 space probes--I think this would be my choice.
