In a very over generalized explanation jeeps from 1942 to 1972 are VERY similar with two basic styles. From 1942 to the mid 1950's most jeeps had the WWII "look" with the flat fenders (they didn't round down in the front) and a flat head 4 cylinder engine and a three speed transmission. In 1952 they started the round fender jeeps (in the picture) they had a F head engine, which is essentially the flat head engine modified with the intake valves in the head but the exhaust valves still in the block.

There are exceptions there was one model of flat fender jeep with the F head, some later jeeps offered a 4 speed, 2wd jeeps, diesel jeeps dually jeeps. but all of these have the same transfer case, front and rear axles, brake master cylinders/wheel cylinders etc.

Great pictures Hank!!
Jeeps were certainly still around when I was in vietnam, tho they had other utility vehicles too.

I may later tell of a jeep ride I took up at the old imperial citadel in Hue in April 1971. Hue today, is a tourist destination, complete with lush gardens, clean neat appearances, reflection pools and nice and neat and spot free but in '71, was still wide open to whomever wanted to enter it's ancient walls and showing all evidence of the mayhem that took place during the Tet battle a few years earlier. The city of Hue itself, was still a very dangerous place in '71.

Although I was born well after the Vietnam war was over, all the cartoons I watched in the 1980s (like GI Joe, etc.), the "Jeep" was the quintessential military vehicle we saw in basically every movie... whether it was Wargames, Iron Eagle, etc... it was all the dark green Jeep (or painted bluish grey if it was on an Air Force base).

Todd, I used to watch the rat patrol tv series.

WW II military campaign in North Africa. The jeeps had a tan color. Since I have seen the show, to this day the machine gun behind the front seats impressed me. I even recently bought a full size plastic replica to put in my 1985 Jeep CJ7 Laredo, for parades.

A Browning 50, ma deuce. What it doesn't show Cliff, is the passenger and driver having to fight all those hot empty .50cal shell casings going down the collars of their shirts and nestling in between their legs in the front seats.

What weapon is your replica of? Where did you get it? My OD jeep as a Canadian passenger side mount for a M1919 however I can't bring myself of splurge for a demil'ed version. If there is a cheap couple hundred dollar plastic version that sound like more my speed, especially would be better explaining to others when driving that it isn't real.

That's not a "winch"... that's an impact absorbing bumper!

I defer to you expertise. How ever, it also shot side to side and rearward. Welders do have welding aprons. The real fight was winning WW II.

I don't know if it is a replica of any certain type of machine gun, mounted on a jeep or not. I wouldn't know.

I got mine at a large classic vehicle swap meet. (Until my edit I posted swat.) There were a few of them. Spring loaded which shot plastic shells fed by a clip. Mine is on a tripod.

Coincidence?
I think not.

April(4) 4th (4) is National Jeep 4x4 day.
