Corn Based Alcohol (may be worse) for the environment. (Page 3/5)

I suppose some farmers may have contracts to sell directly to the ethanol plants but it's usually the grain bins that do that and are required to fulfill those futures contracts at the pre-agreed upon price. (beef producers, oil producers and other commodity producers do this all the time too)
Ethanol got it's bogus start when there were a couple of years of bumper crops of corn and soybeans and the price fell below what it cost the farmer to produce it.
Ethanol in fuels was invented as an alternative to take advantage of the surplus cheap corn but congress took it too far. Now we're stuck with it come rain or drought.

Really, I understand we're supporting farmers, but we're basically making them produce things that we don't want, and isn't really good for us.

It's called capitalism. It isn't designed to be good for you. It's design to create greed and conspiracy.

That's not Capitalism. You're talking about Corporatism... where the Government and the Corporations collude.

As the cereal commercial said, Wrongo, Mary Lou. I properly described the reality of capitalism. More, more more (money) is what capitalism promotes within those who practice it and there is no upper boundary for it.

Edit. It's easy enough to look at the robber barons (sp) of America, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, the bankers through out history. Big Pharma does it when they buy a drug and jack the price by 3000% overnight.

Capitalism is an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and their operation for profit. Central characteristics of capitalism include capital accumulation, competitive markets, price system, private property, property rights recognition, voluntary exchange, and wage labor.

What other way would you prefer?

Corn absorbs CO2 as it grows. How much CO2 does oil absorb as its pumped?
