Go for a float.
...
Went through there in the late '70s, that time the Trans Canada was washed out, turned back from the hwy 11 turnoff due to heavy flooding.
Delayed for a day, when we passed over the repaired section in the deep vee of a valley, far to the east, I was amazed at the scale of the damage.
Big rain, much water running downhill, a semi truck and trailer had fallen into the hole, 60' below the road level.
Took many hours to get through to Wawa.
I'm pretty sure that was the time I had a Ryder 25' stake truck, heavy.
Painted Sky in late summer, the expanse of the universe visible at night, exhilarating.
Great experience, out in the boonies.
Solitude, Nature.

Lake Nipigon, Ontario.
Yes, the driving distance between Toronto to Nipigon, is 1268 km.
790 miles.

Re :
50. Re: Best route across Ontario. Hwy 17 or 11??

I do longhaul from Toronto to Vancouver on a weekly basis,
and from where Hwy 400 North in Barrie splits into either hwy 11 or hwy 69 which turns into hwy 17 there is only a 60km difference in the total mileage between Barrie and Nipigon where travellers are routed once again to hwy 17 to leave the province of Ontario.
I myself use hwy 11 all year round as traffic is usually lighter, the road surface flatter and straighter and more service areas along the way with more than just fuel and accommodations. Unlike what most posters on here have said, there is fuel available in every little town along the way from Barrie to Nipigon along hwy 11. The only area where there is no services of any kind is the 210km stretch of hwy between Hearst and Longlac EB/WB.
Yes there are far fewer passing lanes on hwy 11 compared to 17 but when you factor in that on hwy 11 your heading due north from Barrie to Cochrane and then due west from Cochrane to Nipigon, if you needed to pass another motorist on hwy 11 it'd be very easy too as there is no hills or curves as there are on 17. Y
es there are Moose from time to time on 11 but mostly only in the stretch between Hearst and Longlac which being flat and straight you can see the moose from a mile away.
Speed limit is 90 all along 11 but doing 105kmph is perfectly acceptable all along this hwy. with the almost of curves hills and drops on 17 you'd be very lucky to maintain 105kmph at all given the amount of truck traffic and campers along that route that are constantly speeding up and slowing down to stay on the hwy in one piece.
So given all that, yes you'll be giving up lakefront scenery to a degree on hwy 11 vs 17 but at the expense of having a nice quiet uninterrupted drive on 11 with plenty of places to stop along the way OR taking hwy 17 which is very squirrelly and dangerous both at night and day because you'll never know what's around the curve till your already in it.
Want to save time and wear and tear on your vehicle, use hwy 11....want the longer lakefront route with fewer services along the way, than try your luck at hwy 17.
PS...as of Spring 2015, they have completely repaved the 35km stretch of hwy 11 between Mattice-Val-Cote Westbound to Hearst.
The rest of the "rough-patch" from Kapuskasing to Mattice will be completed next year I do believe.

Surprised none of ya's have mentioned the Northern Timberbottler.

Pesky thing, mostly harmless but LOUD, and irritating.

It shows up, drinks all your beer, then goes back to its own cabin.

You should so go for a drive up the trans-canada beyond Hope, trek up into the hills, seeking revelations.
Bring a friend, equip yourselves with the necessary survival gear, hump the hills until you too, meet your wilderness people.
Bring food, they like food, dried fish, meats, fruits, nuts, berries, deer, elk, moose, rabbit.

I think, I believe, that you have to invite the Sasquatch to speak to you, a mental telepathy experiment.
A kind of Zen frame of mind, free of the clutter of domesticated life, one with nature.

There I was, hanging out, taking a whizz, when, like, all of a sudden like, I saw the Forest Man, I shrunk to an 8 year old, my nuts contracting back into my body,
an involuntary fear response, quite humbling, standing there, holding it.
I shuddered, astounded by what I had seen, trembling in fear of the unknown, unimaginable revelation.
' What the ? '
Yeah, scared to my toes !
Hair of my head standing on end, I could feel it, it was like a mental projection, from another entity, like what sharks can do, a highly evolved and adapted creature communicating by telepathy.
' Hey ! Get out of my head ! '
Yeah, like that.
' Man, that's some strange phenomenon, thought projection. '
I'm still shaking, thinking about it, so many years later, it never leaves you, it's imprinted, like, they can read your mind.
But they love us.
Get that.
