Besides, it would be very difficult to write such a law without violating the first amendment.
edit: I see that rinselberg posted while I was composing my post. He said essentially the same thing in his last sentence. How very Libertarian!

What is being lightly discussed is probably viewed as criminal libel. Most libel (defamation) cases end up in civil court. Only about 1/2 the states have criminal libel laws on the books. Probably one of the least prosecuted crimes in the country.

It's an easy guess which criminal charge is the least made in every state in the Union.

NO criminal defamation laws exist at the federal level in the United States.
Dominion's moribund lawsuit was filed in THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
Both the FRCP, (Federal Rules of Civil Procedure) and the FRE (Federal Rules of Evidence) are far more strict and exacting than in state courts.

I'm sure that Dominion's choice not to bring their lawsuit in Ms. Powell's state of domicile and business, (Texas), was a political one, however their only alternative to that jurisdiction being a federal suit has hamstrung them to a set of procedural rules that will not help their case.
It also shortens the process of any interlocutory appeals during the pendency of the litigation, a process that Ms. Powell is demonstrably very familiar with.[This message has been edited by randye (edited 03-25-2021).]
