"In San Diego, the Bonnie Dick is burning..."
So, business as usual... ?
Listen, comedically, I knew it was risky, going in. But I had ta' do it.
I like smiling! [This message has been edited by Boondawg (edited 07-19-2020).]

I'm not a maritime structural engineer, but I'm just not seeing how you come back from that without major repairs. They'd literally have to cut out entire sections and maybe even replace the entire conning tower.

There were others.
Major repairs, refits and overhauls are done all the time.
Littoral ships like the BHR are an integral part of the military tactical and strategic planning now.

Great article...
I know the USS Wisconsin got the bow of the USS Kentucky, a yet to be completed Iowa-class Battleship that never came to be. Do you think they're going to fix this? It's from 1998, which is not horribly new, but not exactly old either.

For me, I think they may try to use any repair funding to build an extra America class LHA amphib, (BHR is a Wasp Class LHD) but the 2 don't really have the same capabilities. LHD has a well deck, America LHAs do not. LHA has smaller medical capabilities compared to Wasp class LHD too.
The LHA would land Marines via helicopter and MV22 Osprey instead of traditional landing craft, and would thus be able to stand off farther from the beach. Future versions of the America class may have a well deck incorporated tho, like LHA 8 USS Bougainville, whose keel was laid in 2019 in Pascagoula Miss Ingalls shipyard. .
LHA https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...hibious_assault_ship
LHD https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...hibious_assault_ship

They will just have to do a thorough examination of the patient to see if surgery can fix the damage cheaper and faster than cloning a new & improved version. America class cost about $3.4B to build in 2019 dollars. The Bougainville may be higher in cost.[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 07-22-2020).]

Probably not a good thing to be advertising. Now the whole world knows the weakness of those ships (fire surpression), and that it doesn't really take that much (relatively speaking) to send one to the junkyard.

That is a very much ill informed statement. A ship pier side, undergoing major refit for a different aircraft component & with most of it's crew not aboard is nothing at all like a fighting ship's ability to carry out damage control at sea. You should stick with your conspiracy theories.
From US Naval Institute (USNI)
Only about 160 sailors of the ship’s 1,000 crew were aboard Bonhomme Richard when the fire broke out. The ship had been undergoing maintenance on Pier 2 at Naval Base San Diego, following a $249 million maintenance availability at the nearby General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard that included updates to support the Marine Corps’ advanced F-35B Lightning II joint strike fighter.[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 12-01-2020).]
