Sometimes I wish they would bring back some of the older poisons that were known to kick ass on bugs. I remember when I was growing up, my dad showed me this “stuff” from Ortho/Chevron that worked great on ants. It was called Chlordane Dust. My dad said, “see Kit, you just sprinkle a little bit of this white dust along their trail and the next day, they’ll all be gone”. And they were….. 😀

For a more eco-friendly alternative, my wife and I have had very good success mixing AJAX brand dish soap and water in a spray bottle. (50/50 ratio)

The thing is though... what else was "gone"?

Terro is the best, comes in a handy small bottle. lust pour a line near their trail, they will take the product back to the nest. Will kill the the whole nest in a day or so.

Thats kinda funny, considering the active ingredient in Terro Liquid ant bait is...Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate, commonly known as .........Borax. Powdered Borax is easily water (and other liquid) soluble.



Decades ago, it was common to mix powdered borax laundry detergent (20 Mule Team/Death Valley Days sponsor brand) with a lb of cornmeal and treat for fire ants. All it really did, was make 'em move over 5-15' and most ant mound treatments do the same thing even today.

What started out as maybe two divisions at a time being sucked off the surface being replaced fairly quickly has turned into an occasional recon platoon.

As none have ever reported back I assume they just kept sending them out until the emptied their ranks.
The ones that I find now are just wandering their original line. I think this battle has been won.

Wow - thanks for posting that - I used Borax and diatomaceous earth to eliminate the cave crickets in the basement years ago, and tried a 'shotgun approach' with the ants (put out a few different things, including borax - and they all went for the Terro. I usually read the ingredient list but didn't in this case. That's great! Maybe those ants were a 'snooty long Island species' that prefer brand names.

Here in San Leandro, there was a company that made Ant Stakes- Grants Ant Stakes...They used arsenic- never had any problem with them and the ants would carry poison back to queen, killing whole colony....Worked very well...

Anyway, a couple of decades ago, they had >>2<< kids use toothpicks to dig some of the poison out and ingest it- got sick but did not die...So they outlawed the ingredient, and the new chemical worked ok- but then here in San Leandro, we started getting Argentine Ants....And the new stuff did not work at all on them, so the company went under.

I have tried the other "Ant stakes" and none work on the Argentine ants....

Mainly, I track the ants back to where they are entering my house, and then SEAL the entrance....(Yes, my doors still open for me (Sort of)

I use "SEAL-ANT" on the openings (I'll shut up now)
