Todd, Bill Millers is good ... enough ... being a fast food. I will agree awesome. For a fast food. We Texans pride ourselves on making the best BBQ, at home, for family and friends. Enjoying the company of family, friends, smelling the cooking as we enjoy the company. Home BBQ is a great way to gather friens and family. I would never let Bill Millers cater a home event of mine, and have never seen anyone do it. They do have many locations, many. In every area of town and also other Texas cities.

I have built or remodeled some BBQ places. Where the had smoke houses out back and cooked on premise. Bill Miller locations do not. Rudy's does. And they BBQ good meat. Their sides, excellent.

In my opinion, Bill Millers prices have exceeded the taste value. Still good though.

Since you mentioned Wonder Bread, I remember as a small lad, when we drove by their Bakery in downtown San Antonio, they had a powered conveyor belt moving loaves of bread. which could be seen from the car. A long one.

I would agree with this... I think Bill Millers was awesome when you wanted a decent dinner for a good price. We used to order the turkey from them though... full disclosure. You could order an entire Thanksgiving dinner from them, and we used to order the turkey and a couple of sides from them. Hahah... it was pretty affordable, and it was pretty awesome. They'd back up a big truck to the parking lot (I would go to the one on North 281), and you'd get a large tote bag with the sides, and a big ass turkey in a box.

Bill Millers, in the BBQ world, sucks. Plain and simple. Even Memphis in May type BBQ (pork) is better and I found it way too sweet.

And yes, CliffW is correct. Bill Millers cooks most of their meat in what they call a 'central plant' in San Antonio, and then deliver it by truck out to the different storefronts. They recently built a new one in San Antonio as they outgrew the old one.
(They recently had a big lawsuit lost over their BBQ sauce spilling on a dumbass customer and being too hot...cost them over 2 million bucks)

Damn! Seems like it's gone down hill (or they can't maintain the cost). I suppose I left when they were still good (well, haha... I think they're good).

I do recognize that other BBQ is just much better, but they were good for quick and cheap. Couldn't beat that price!


I remember when I moved to San Antonio, there was a new restaurant that moved there that I recognized back home... it was called Pollo Tropical. It was owned by the same company that owned Taco Cabana. They lasted only 6 months to a year, and they all went out of business in San Antonio... it seemed no one in San Antonio wanted Cuban food... which is what it was. No brown beans in sight, only black beans.

They have it here in Florida though, and it's very popular. But I did get a kick out of one thing... there was a new place called HTeo that had opened multiple places in San Antonio. I used to joke about how stupid it was, and how dumb people had to be to go spend money at a place that literally only sells iced tea. A couple of months later, I found myself getting tea there almost every other day... so I became one of the idiots.

Incidentally, the first two locations outside of San Antonio opened in East Tampa... it was awesome... felt like I was back at my San Antonio home.

When I went to get some tea (after having opened), they said... "You should download our App and get points!" and I said... "Kid... you can scan my app any time... I already have points..." and then I went on to tell him I had just moved from San Antonio... he didn't care of course, but I felt special. Haha...

Taco Cabana ? Their first location was in San Antonio. I ate there when founded.

I have never heard of HTeo. Wish I would have. When I am in Florida, we eat Cubano sandwiches. Very good.

Interesting story.

On time I was visiting and we took my Grandma to the Carnaval Miami. She, we thought she got lost. We found her at a cigar rolling exhibition. She had previously worked at Hav-A-Tampa, as she lived in Tampa. Hav-A-Tampa is a renound cigar company, developed after Fidel Castro became dictator over Cuba. Cuban cigars were banned.

She had a big crowd surrounding her and praising her.

McAllister's Deli is a franchise type sandwich shop but is also, for whatever reason; 'known' for it's iced tea. Wife likes it, I find it seriously 'lacking'. There is one here in Copperas Cove, and I don't see what is so great about it's sandwiches or it's tea but evidently, you can buy a ticket to get 'free' iced tea there. It's not even 'Lipton iced tea' good. The closest thing they have to beef there is a roast beef club or a corned beef club samich and I vowed to never again in my life after 1971 to ever ever ever eat corned beef again. A horrible waste of good brisket.

Jack Allen's is another 'en vogue' eatery I wouldn't bother with again. Down in Cedar Park.
Same with Flannigan's in Bertram. I ordered a Frito pie and it came in a bowl, with spinach on top. The waitress said it was "Austin style'. It was terrible.
