As a lover of manual equipped cars, I hear you... but having said that, I don't mind the hydrostatic transmission on my John Deere 345 at all. Makes cutting the grass easier IMO (especially with the additional benefit of power steering!)... and as long as the hydrostatic transmission stays fully functional, I'm happy enough with it.[This message has been edited by Patrick (edited 06-22-2025).]

Hopefully you will grow to appreciate the hydro drive. When I bought my Bolens I thought hydrostatic drive, so what. After mowing with it a few times, and my neighbor asking me how can you back up so quickly, I became a hydro fan. It's faster and easier to mow, if I had to replace it I would definitely want another hydro drive tractor.

I added some running lights & put in super bright Led headlight bulbs.

They are much brighter that the stock bulbs. Each headlight bulb has 24 LEDs.

Is there a lot of traffic on your lawn at night?

I'm still mowing with my 1974 IH Cub Cadet 1450 hydrostat. Tilling gardens for the neighbors with it as well. With the 14 hp Kohler single cylinder, the machine is a beast!

LOL, When its hot outside I usually mow later in the day, when finished it's about sunset.
I live on a corner lot, want the cars to see me when I'm close to the road. I know from the back and sides it was hard to see me, the rear red & orange side marker lights take care of that.
This upgrade was only 20 bucks.

I like the lights idea. Although I have a six-foot finish mower for my Kubota tractor, it's best utilized with the FEL removed and I generally don't like going through that exercise. Our Zero-Turn mower is a 2005 version we inherited when I Spousal Unit's father passed away. Yeah, it's getting up there in age and it does get used about once a week (depending on weather).
Recently, the motor started giving me issues. Knowing the age of this mower, I was very tempted to just go buy a new mower but then I saw the prices. Ended up ordering a new motor. A new motor wasn't cheap but, compared to the price of new mowers, I saved a bunch. While I'd really like to have a bigger cutting deck, I just can't justify spending that kind of money. A new 54 inch Kubota was over $8K at my local dealership with taxes to bring it home. I thought about putting lights on my old zero-turn but, there's a difference in wanting and needing. I'm not mowing after dark and I don't have the traffic issues you do.------------------ Rams Learning most of life's lessons the hard way. .
