I'm always amazed that these work at all. I'd have to imagine the force needed to expand a piece of tubing from the inside would be far greater than the strength of the threads on that bolt. But I have to assume it's forged, etc... and I've never seen one fail. But they just amaze me.

I actually broke one, once. One of the long, "flat" pieces that go around the outside. I don't remember how. The bolts are damn near bulletproof. I even used an impact. (That's not how I broke it, however.)[This message has been edited by Raydar (edited 05-08-2023).]
