I was 7 but I recall my mom talking with grandma worried that her brothers were going to get sent.
They ended up in Germany and Japan instead.

Boggles my mind. My dad served in WW2. Died in 1988. If he were still alive he'd be 107. But he was, I guess, "older" when he served. Mid-late 20s.
He was a mechanic. Drove a tank recovery vehicle. Essentially, a Sherman with a wrecker boom. I can only imagine some of the sh!t he saw.

He only related one "war story".
One morning he took off his glasses to shave. Laid them on the tread of a tank, parked next to where he was standing. Tank drove off and ran over his glasses. He just said he was thankful he wasn't wearing them at the time.
