The freeways between Palo Alto and Fremont after midnight make a GREAT testing ground, there's NOBODY on the roads, maybe a few cars on 880.

I remember back in high school, most of the "Cool guys" wanted their cars to emulate the "Funnycar look"....Jacked way up in back, with fatties in back and the skinniest tires they could find in front. They could not turn- had to come to a stop before making any turns- luckily, my father had been a sports car nut back in the fifties, so I was into handling- moderately fat tires front and rear, and relatively low at both ends. ( I will not mention some of the other things I did that were....."super-coolio")
The "cool kids" now modify the engine controls so that the engine backfires all the time- but then the engine runs like crap....The cool kids are so shm(F)art!

Yep, recently, I've watched 2 of these things try to take on the hot shot Mustangs on the highways. Once on PA Rt 33 north of Bath PA, came up from behind me so did not see where it all started but they got in front of me and others then side by side slowed down to maybe 5-10MPH blocking the highway (which was nuts as traffic was moving about 70 prior) then took off. They did this twice with the ricer back firing on deccel. The Pony kicked its ass both times. Similar on I287 N in Piscataway AT RUSH HOUR weaving through cars. Same result.

Not a fan of the burble and crackle tunes either, I appreciate a nice pop after a hard shift, but if when decelerating it just backfires constantly, it is annoying.
However, the car does not need to run poorly to achieve this. Below find a Fueling map for a WRX. The top column is engine load which is found by dividing the MAF air mass in grams by how many RPMs the motor is turning. Left column is RPM. The values in the table are the commanded air fuel ratios. WRXs run very rich at higher loads due to the boxer layout and what it likes for timing and AFRs.
The green arrow starts at a typical value where you are cruising on the highway at 14.7:1 AFR, then the gas pedal is pushed to the floor and you quickly end up in the high load column and remain there through redline.
The red arrow is letting off the gas, the throttle closes and the MAF values drop drastically very quickly. You end up at high RPMs in the almost no load category, and the only way to get here is by letting off the gas at higher RPMs. These values can be commanded to be pretty rich so that excess unburnt fuel exits the cylinder and hits the hot exhaust manifold and creates the incessant backfires. The motor still runs fine, especially under load, more than anything it is just a waste of gas. As long as the car is tuned this way, there are no hiccups in air fuel values that the computer is not expecting so everything runs and performs as it should. So it is just obnoxious more than anything.
