Now thats scary. A life saving device running on batteries. The worst part is that's a pumper truck so that pump can be running for hours depending on the size of the fire. You hope it doesn't die in the middle of firefighting.

Hopefully it will be assigned to the Sacramento area, where it can do the most good

Why do GPS units tell you a 1000'? I know it is just under 1/4 mile, but it sounds a lot shorter of a distance and I think that causes people to drive even more erratic. These new cars will hopefully let us drive more EROTIC. The new lane driving stuff has really moved up since my Honda CR-V

I did an imaginary trip from Athens, Ga. to Carlisle, Pa. in an electric vehicle. The first time I made the trip in my Fiero (gasoline-powered) it took me 12 hours up and 10 hours back. Average 11 hours per direction. 655 miles by Google's calculations.

So, expecting 200 miles on a charge for an electric vehicle would require 3 stops along the way to recharge. It's my understanding by some accounts I've read that a full charge can be had as quickly as 30 minutes and as long as 14 hours, depending upon the vehicle's batteries and the charging station. You can get about 100 miles on a quick 35 minute charge.

With 3 stops at 12 hours per recharge, would take at least 2 full days to make a one-way trip. Stopping every 100 miles, for a 30-minute charge would add just 3 hours to the trip, and that's assuming there is an available charging station precisely every 100 miles. The big advantage is for Big Brother. They can track every move you make as you use your charge card at every stop. At least you can travel incognito in a gasoline-powered vehicle by paying cash.

There's one great advantage to electric vehicles. There's little left to clean up after a fire. HazMat can put most of it in barrels.

Well now the real shaming begins! Criticizing the type of electric vehicle you drive for efficiency

Most manufacturers seems to be missing the overall "use case" and requirements of vehicles purchased by their customers. Personally I do not see an all electric future for vehicles, I see all types of vehicles co-existing with most being electric or plug in electric hybrids. What do farmers use for their trucks? What dwellers in old urban centers use with oonly on street parking with no garage or reserved spots? What do apartment dwellers do in the suburbs?

I like Ford's approach with their current F150 offering. You can get a gas, a hybrid, or an all electric version (sadly the diesel 150 was dropped from the lineup). A farmer can buy a gas F150, a construction site manager ( who doesn't put on a lot of miles) could go electric, and the local dleivery driver can get the hybrid allowing them the most flexibility. These options offer solutions for various different use cases all on one platform.

Now a electric fire truck sounds less than idea, but if it were a plug in hybrid, it could charge at the station drive on electric and start a call on battery, then switch to a ICE to run the pump and recharge for the drive back to the station, possibly on electric if it idles long enough during the cleanup.

Might be a while before electric shipping rigs then eh?

I shall think. Though automated ones are coming up fast too. With that you wouldn't need line drivers and you could charge between loading.
