But why did a bunch of independent nations become under the curtain of the USSR? LOL!

That unexploded artillery shell in the foreground of that photo sure says a lot.
Other than that, the plane looks like it will buff right out.....[This message has been edited by randye (edited 03-16-2022).]

Man alive, so sad to see the demise of that giant aircraft.

Agreed, not one I would have cared to crew or pilot but, definitely a unique bird. Not really a commercially viable aircraft but for its unique purpose, nothing else could compete.

I thought Dom already destroyed it on the world's longest runway.

Well, they have a half complete fuselage, there's the wings and (some) engines right there. Anybody up for some Flight of the Phoenix type action?[This message has been edited by Zeb (edited 03-22-2022).]

That was a great movie... both the original recreation of the event, and the remake.
My guess, it's probably not worth it. Old technology, and not worth the expense / value. But with everything they do have, it seems like they can probably at least make a museum out of all the parts from the second plane that was planned, and what's left from the first plane.

Unless someone dug it up and just laid it there, the unexploded ordinance doesn't look right. Hard to tell it's diameter or caliber because it's in the foreground of the photo but the fuse is definitely missing. It either wasn't installed before firing from the gun or someone removed it in the hangar, but it's hard to believe that shell landed without penetrating the floor or physically and obviously deforming the front of the projectile.. The rotating or driving band appears to be missing from the round as well.[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 03-24-2022).]
