Where I live, the village puts up lights on all the trees downtown and they take them down in January.... And they throw them away (and/or recycle them). They buy new ones every year. They claim that is less expensive than carefully removing the old ones, safely organizing them and storing them for next season.

If, they are buying the cheap lights, that makes sense, at least to me.

Both the outside lights and inside tree are lit as I type this. Down to turning on two or three times per week now through Valentine's Day. As much work that goes into them I am in no hurry t take them down. The missus has ten sets of LEDs on the tree and MSP uses it as an airport beacon.
A lot of the neighbors are still lighting theirs as well. Some year around in memory of neighbor girl that was murdered.

I cannot remember when our Christmas tree was not up, continuously thru the year. We have not taken it down or appreciably changed it's decoration since 2016 or 2017 maybe.. It's always Christmas at my house.

I used to mow the lawn at a house where they left the tree up year-round. They must've had a thousand decorations, and they rotated them depending on the season. Valentine's Day, 4th of July, Halloween, Memorial Day, etc.... I was never there at dusk to see if they turned the lights on or not though.

Wait, wait, did I hear that right ? You have a tree ?
Aside, I could have been rich. Y'all know our Fieros have pop up head lights. What's wrong with pop down Christmas lights ?

Not no, hell no. Plastics need fossil fuel to be made. I might think about it when plastics can be made with solar or wind power.

Our Christmas tree is among the first few things Jane and I bought 'together' in 1994. I remember it well. We lived temporarily in an apt when we 1st moved to San Angelo and it had snowed the previous night and we decided to walk about 1/4 mile (uphill) to the nearby H-E-B for some reason, and while there, she decided we needed a Christmas tree and decorations. I carried it on my shoulder in it's box back thru the snow (uphill again of course) and we put it up that afternoon. Still have the original box for it, tho tree hasn't spent much time sequestered inside it's darkness. (I don't particularly like trees, but I'm not so cruel as to imprison one in total darkness for most of it's life)
I have actually planted a LOT of trees in my lifetime. Hundreds. An 18 wheeler trailer load of them in 1964-'65 alone. (Parts of trees anyway) None of them ever grew tho, so I just strung barbed wire on and between them. It is not my fault they did not grow..t'was their choice. I, in allmy compassion dug the hole for each one, lovingly planted them and firmly put nature's own soil back around the buried portion and waited and waited for the glorious green buds of branches to appear. They did not. Pine, cedar, oak.. It mattered not, they all refused to take advantage of my generosity and care. Choices have consequences. (All that creosote may have had something to do with their poor performance)
