Is that still, or was that ever, an accurate description of this country?
Was it propaganda that we were indoctrinated with as children?
Does it seem like the stew is trying to melt the pot? |

I think it is a laudable, if somewhat idealistic goal. Some will always fight assimilation because it invades their comfort envelope, but it is necessary for the advancement of the human race.

There was a time, (perhaps there still is), when anyone being a "hyphenated American" wasn't desirable.
Blending in with the America culture was uppermost in immigrant's minds.
That doesn't mean that some cultural traditions and identities were not maintained, but the goal was NOT to set themselves apart.
I vividly recall when I was a boy asking my Grandfather, who immigrated here from Sweden, to teach me Swedish. He was very firm with his reply....in his thick Scandinavian accent..... "Yu ar an American! Yu vill speak English like a proper American!" Years later, (I suppose when he was convinced that all his Grandchildren were "proper Americans"), he did teach us Swedish.
I believe that it is Leftist "identity politics" that seeks to segregate people, not unify them as just Americans, and that segregation is meant to weaken, not strengthen, us as a nation.
Now we hear almost nothing except "__________ - American"
You and I have talked about our younger, (Leftist), days when we were members of the far Left SDS, (Students for a Democratic Society), and I'm sure you also recall all the infighting within SDS between all the different factions, ("Structural Feminists" , The Black Panther Party, the Maoist PLP, the PLP-WSA, the RYM, the Weathermen and on and on...), all of which eventually led to the death of SDS. Marxists / Leftists inevitably and invariably first seek to divide people, (by race, class, wealth, gender, ethnicity), in order to try to gain power which inevitably and invariably leads to their own destruction from the fighting between the factions they created. (HINT: There is ALWAYS going to be the next "Top 1%" after you destroy the current "Top 1%" and your current imagined "oppressor" will always be replaced by another imagined one.)[This message has been edited by randye (edited 12-22-2020).]

If you want to see how multi-culturalism works in nations where it has been happening perhaps we can look to nations that have proceeded us? Argentina. South Africa. France?

The most unifying trait of all I have ever seen is the willingness to pull one's own load and to actually do that. Doesn't matter who or what, those who are pulling their own weight regardless of any other factors can be on my team. There will be those that try and fail, those folks may need a helping hand, those that only want handouts will go hungry.

It can be and very often is, tho you don't read much about that in the news, just read about when it doesn't work very well.
I like to believe that WAS the goal (at least on paper) of the founders of the nation, tho they had pretty strange ways of showing it in practice.
There is I think, a bit of the problem in all of us. Some days I'm American first, Texan 2nd.. other days I'm decidedly Texan 1st, American 2nd.

Diversity for the sake of diversity is what annoys me. Every single Biden cabinet appointee has been announced as the first "something".
"The first left handed, red headed mahjong champion to ever be appointed to secretary of canned tuna fish."

Pushing for "diversity" is the opposite of unifying, that is actually why it is being pushed.

Diversity, in and of itself, simply IS.
People's reaction to other's behavior is what unifies or divides. I've worked in a very diverse (race, gender, national origin, religion, everything) workplace. NOBODY CARED. We all had a job, so we had a common goal. That's what unified us.
Oh, and Bill. We ALL hated Bill.

The day I was born...IN Texas. It comes with the territory. For those that understand, no explanation is needed, for those that don't, none will suffice.[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 12-23-2020).]
