"Covid" Relief Bill (Page 2/6)
blackrams DEC 23, 05:20 AM
I (obviously) haven't been able to get or read a copy of this bill but, after watching the news on what all is contained within it, I am whole heartedly opposed to this bill being passed and signed into law. This spending bill is packed with pork with money going to all kinds of crap programs and countries and not really a clean COVID 19 bill. President Trump needs to VETO it ASAP.
It is very apparent the "swamp" still needs draining.

"In the House, the ominous bill which included the massive defense budget passed 327 – 85, while a second vote approving the Covid-19 stimulus deal sailed through 359 – 53.
The bills enjoyed similarly broad bipartisan support in the Senate, with the coronavirus relief bill 92 – 6. The only ‘no’ votes in the Senate came from six Republicans: Marsha Blackburn (TN), Rand Paul (KY), Rick Scott (FL), Ron Johnson (WI), Mike Lee (UT), and Ted Cruz (TX)."

That thing will be veto-proof.

That may be true but President Trump still should VETO it and make them override the VETO. I’m not sure all those Republican votes will stay the same. My understanding is the Majority Leader McConnell had to do some arm twisting to get it done.

President Trump is asking that the bill be restructured to increase the payment to Americans to $2,000 each/$4,000 families.
Some of the left in the Senate want the president to sign the current bill and then they will pass a larger one after inauguration day.
Politics as usual.

Whether the amount going to citizens gets increased or not, much of the pork included should have never been put in.

Good point, but the initial issue is that there had to be a temporary/stopgap funding bill attached to keep the govt running, and it had to be done quickly.
It, together with all it's spending got attached to the Covid bill for expediencies' sake and the 5,000 to 7000 word mess is what we ended up with.

Pelosi has said she is in favor of the increase but the House is operating in pro forma which means much much less than one 'nay' vote will scuttle the $2k change. McConnell hasn't publicly said either way, but we (congress) has until Monday to get this signed one way or another or the govt will shut down. (assuming the Fed or Treasury dept has no tricks or 'discretionary' funding they can move around to extend that time limit. It's been done before under other administrations)

I'd have been a lot happier if they had focused on passing a real budget.

The people of this country should realize that the Congress has been too busy trying to take down a duly elected President, instead of fulfilling their Constitutional financial responsibilities.
