Whoa! I keep hearing ignore attacks/insults and now that's a problem? Hmm.........

Actually, it's not all that easy to navigate the forum and always scroll past Randye's messages without accidentally reading one (or part of one) simply because it enters my field of view. I've became more adept at it, with practice. I even have two "hacks" that I use. One, I call an "IAS"—an acronym for Image Activated Scroll. The other is to swivel the angle of my video monitor. Of course that only works because I have a video monitor, and seldom experience the forum using my iPhone. These hacks have proven their usefulness, and are worth the small extra effort.

Feel free to PM me if you want a clearer explanation of these "hacks."

Cliff, first of all... thank-you thank-you for creating the Politics & Religion sub-section. Much appreciated.

I'm so glad that members here who enjoy political "discussion" now have their own little corner to reside in where they can focus on resolving world problems.

May I make one suggestion in regards to O/T (and this may've already been requested)?

It's inevitable that a perfectly fine O/T thread will be "sabotaged" by inappropriate political comments. May I suggest that instead of the entire thread then being banished to the new sub-section, that the offending post simply be deleted from the thread? These inappropriate posts could be reported to you in the usual manner, and it probably wouldn't take much of a gander by you to determine that comments about Nazis, Leftists, Trump, Biden, Trudeau, whomever/whatever don't belong in a thread about composting. Well, maybe they do, but I think you catch my drift. Thanks.

I really, really, really don't like deleting posts. I only very seldomly do and usually because it's actually requested by the poster (and even then, I'll only delete a post if I deem it in the best interest of all parties involved).

I have been thinking about an "upvote/downvote" option (or like/dislike if you prefer to call it that). If a post receives many downvotes, it is minimized in the thread. Meaning you only see one line, with poster's name and a small text "this post is hidden due to downvoting". To read the post, you'd have to click it.

This way, posts will not be deleted and it can actually become visible again when people remove their downvote, or it receives enough upvotes to offset de downvotes.

That's a good idea.

This Forum takes enough of your time without having to 'babysit' for those that cannot self-filter.

I hope I am wrong, but I think I can predict how that up/down voting will go. Every member that is of a known minority leaning compared to the majority of this board's political affiliation will have all their posts minimized, regardless of what the content or subject is. Any member that openly is or supports LBGT will have all their posts minimized by downvote,. Any member that questions the majority view on any social aspect will see all their posts minimized. All this, not because of what a post says but because of who it was that posted it.
I hope I'm wrong...

I think that would be a step backwards, not forwards. Forum member "maryjane" has just nailed it. So I am not in any way enthused about this idea.

Instead of that, I would prefer an option where I could single out particular forum member(s) and any public message or "post" from, say "rinselberg" for example (although I probably wouldn't do that to myself) would be hidden from me, like that. If they started a thread, that would still show up on my List of Topics page. But the contents of the post itself, if I clicked on that thread--hidden.

The upvote/ downvote thing only works if a majority of users agree with each other. If most here are conservative you will not see liberal points because they will get voted out. Imgur is that way. You can’t have a conservative view there because the liberals will downvote you and your responses are hidden. I no longer go there because it’s a leftist echo chamber.

Cliff, I completely understand. If a post has been made, it needs to stand the test of time, and not be erased on a whim. I think I've deleted a grand total of one of my posts here in 23 years.

However... this may be a situation where deleting a post is the lesser evil, and by far the simplest step for you to take. Excellent points have already been raised that highlight the potential problem of members "voting" other member's posts up or down. IMO it would be a disaster from the start.

If someone is purposely sabotaging a perfectly fine O/T thread, with the sole intent of having it banished to a different section of the forum where many of us don't wish to visit... then why show any mercy? I'm not talking about bringing out the ban hammer (at least initially), I'm just suggesting that deleting the offending post is the simplest most effective way of dealing with members who refuse to follow the no politics in O/T rule.

Here's a better idea: Get rid of the five or six babies, and let the adults continue to have intelligent conversations. I mean seriously, at least two of them are literally mentally ill, why are we giving them an outlet for their insane ramblings and forcing the rest of us to put up with it?

The new 'Politics and Religion' section is a great idea though, 'Containment Forums' have been mostly successful on other forums.
