If I were still working in Palo Alto and got this news, I'd be thrilled.
"Tesla CEO Elon Musk threatened in May to move the company's headquarters from Fremont, California, which is just across the bay from Palo Alto, to Texas or Nevada,"
Tesla's HQ is actually in Palo Alto, Fremont is the manufacturing facility.
My commute from northern San Jose to Fremont was 20-30 minutes unless traffic was really bad, San Jose to Palo Alto during rush hours was 1.5 hours ONE WAY, or 3 hours a day. It was beyond ridiculous and the main reason I left. Even after midnight with nobody on the roads and breaking the speed limit, my best time was 28 minutes.
There is VERY little actual living space near Palo Alto, where all the cool kids want their company HQ's to be like HP and Apple, as a result houses and apartments the closer you get to those areas get even more expensive. Either $2,000,000 1200 sq ft houses from the 60's or 700 sq ft studio apartments for $3500/month. They're only cheaper right now because of the pandemic. Compare with the ever increasing but still affordable cost of living in Houston and Austin. HP leaving its spiritual home is HUGE.

It's not going to be in Houston proper, but in Spring Tx. Outskirts of Houston I suppose. About the same distance (as the crow flies) from Houston as it will be from where I live.

Any place that has a town named "Cut and Shoot" after a dispute between church members is OK in my book. That's got Show Low beat all to hell.

I drive thru Cut and Shoot quite often as it sits on Hiway 105 to Conroe, the nearest Lowes and Home Depot. It may have got it's name from achurch disagreement, but it earned that name during the 50s and 60s, as about 8 miles either side of CuNShoot, it was just one seedy beer joint, brothel, and gambling spot after another. The Rangers finally cleaned up the brothels and gambling in the early 80s and highway patrols pretty much ended the string of countyline beer joints by stopping so many of their drunk customers, but for a couple of decades, it was a place for decent folks to avoid. The kind of places where if you didn't have a knife when you wen in, they'd lend you one. Ownership would get it back one way opr another at the end of the night.
Now, it's known for all the flea markets that have sprung up in the same locations. (that and used tire shops)
100 miles North and just East of I-45 is Gun Barrel City, but it has no real history to speak of that comes anywhere close to Cut N Shoot.[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 12-02-2020).]

Will the coming bailout of CA be a trillion added to the national debt? And all the unemployed will flood into the other states., SADLY so.

According to what I have read, one of the reasons for moving was employee preference. No state income tax here and the legislature passed not long ago, a constitutional amendment banning Texas from ever having one. Lower energy costs was the 2nd stated reason. HP states commercial tax savings was not high on their list of reasons.
Next 'big fish' is rumored to be the NASDAQ moving from NJ to Dallas/Fort Worth and it IS wanting to leave there because of tax increases tho NJ has offered to delay levying those new taxes on NASDAQ for a period of 2 years if they agree to stay. Energy saings in Tx is a big enticement as well.
quote | The New York Stock Exchange declined to comment and the Nasdaq did not immediately responded to FOX Business’ request for comment.
New Jersey’s proposed financial transaction tax, would be levied against stocks, options, futures and swaps, could generate up to $10 billion per year and plug the state’s projected annual budget deficit.
Both the NYSE and the Nasdaq have already successfully tested running their data centers from locations outside of New Jersey in the event they are forced to relocate.
Texas’ business-friendly environment has enticed a number of corporations seeking to flee high-tax states. Among the companies that have moved to Texas include Charles Schwab, AT&T, McKesson and PGA of America. |

This is nothing new, HP is just big enough to make the news. This state is desperate, the only way it continues is to have the FEDs bail them out. Hey do you want to buy a train?
