Delco Audio Head Units / Who Repair, Service or Modify? {Perhaps Grow a Source List?} (Page 1/2)

Purpose

This post is for members who need electronics technicians to get their vintage Delco head unit functioning and perhaps, to grow a list by contributing from other members experiences.

*If you’re a DIY person and researching Delco information; check-out member FieroSound post in the “How-To” section titled “Delco radio/cassette repair (with Blaupunkt cassette unit)” as he posted many valuable links.
https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum9/HTML/000051.html

**This thread is NOT a debate to post negative undertones or insults about the topic.

Personal preference plays a significant role to keep a factory Delco head unit in their Fiero, or their choice of the formats between analog and digital recordings.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Preface

I’m an audiophile with an enormous investment of analog era music and spent countless hours to record my favorite artists on high-quality tapes.

Since I’m now rejuvenating the interior of my 1988 Fiero GT as ‘stock’ as possible; I has been hunting for a source to restore my factory Delco UX1 head unit as I still find my cassette collection appealing.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Given That

Member Fiero Tom has been on PFF for years…

Members David Riedle and TheDigitalAlchemist both recommend Joe {Joseph} Sciarrino in New York in 2020 and 2023.

Member css9450 has commented a few times that he used M&R Electronics in Michigan many years ago.

And I been posting that Wags Klassic Electronics in Nebraska is another vintage Delco repair option.

SO
Last Saturday, I created an email stating that I interested in a Delco AM/FM Radio w/ Cassette and 5-Band Equalizer restoration; Delco model 16050352. My priority is the cassette section and frequency alignment of the AM and FM bands weren’t my main concern.

My ‘restoration’ request was replacing all of the aged ‘general purpose’ electrolytic capacitors with premium audio caps and the cassette drive belt; checking the resistors and transistors; replace internal lamps, plus a deep cleaning checklist and all the mechanisms are lubed.

I Sent My Request To:
*Member fierosound has posted Fiero Tom’s email as tmorris86@gmx.com

*Joe Sciarrino / delcomaster84@gmail.com

*M&R Electronics from their “free estimate” section on their site as they don't show an email address / www.mnrelectronics.com

*Kevin Wagner of Wags Klassic Electronics / WagsKlassics@gmail.com

Kevin Wagner of Wags Klassic Electronics responded the same day. We bounced emails back and forth and as a summary, he offers adding Bluetooth in the restoration. When I asked about rough figures; “it really depends on the failures within the radio. If everything’s great, probably ~ $150, worst case scenario would be ~ $325 which includes Bluetooth if desired”.

M&R Electronics responded early Monday morning with only four words: “repair estimate around $250”. Lacking any 'Hello' or 'Thank-you '; I wasn’t interested getting any more details in their service…

Joseph Sciarrino responded Tuesday with the most details on his first email, which will repair and restore the unit for $175, plus return shipping costs. He also offers an auxiliary jack for an additional $50 charge. After bounced emails back and forth on my premium audio capacitor request; he agreed to order the special caps for my unit at an extra fee; I was sold!

I’m still waiting if Fiero Tom will respond; perhaps the email address isn’t correct…?

Possibly. Tom no longer has an email address in his profile.

Anyone wanting to contact him will have to try using PM.

A while back, Cliff masked all the members' email addresses, due to the proliferation of scammers.
Maybe Tom still checks PMs?

My email has been "up for grabs" ever since I registered. It's masked now, too.

FYI
In "Fiero Tom still converting radios? by fierofrenzy" in Sept 2023, Fiero Tom didn't check-in...

Since you commented Raydar that "Maybe Tom still checks PMs" - I sent him one today and asked if he can post a response on *this* thread....

*As Aug 22, no word from Fiero Tom - I hope he is 'too busy' and safe...

Since you've obviously been here for a while, maybe Cliff will give you Tom's email, if you ask. Provided that Tom had it accessible to begin with. (I can't imagine that he wouldn't.)

Edit - Or maybe Cliff could give users a choice to "opt in" again, now that the scammer situation is better known. I think it may have been "opt out", in the past.

UPDATE
Joseph Sciarrino wasn't responding, finally he said:

I am currently in the processing moving, so unfortunately my free time is limited.

SO, a change of plans - I'm sending the unit to Wags Klassic Electronics {Kevin Wagner} indeed...
