Need Help Identifying An Engine--ASAP (Page 1/2) |

I have an engine that was removed from a Fiero. It's remanufactured, but the tag doesn't give a company name.
The engine has a crankshaft sensor and a knock sensor in the right side of the block. It doesn't have the webbing and "F" of the 3.4 V6. The block sides are smooth and has a "T" casting where we would usually find the "F".
I need to get injectors quickly for an install. I don't know what the displacement and hp is.

Many years ago, both you and I posted on a thread that tried to answer this question.....without much luck. My best guess is a 3.1 van engine, but rebuilders often bore engines...so who knows?

Sounds like a 3.1L V6 block. It has Fiero iron heads and top end on it? Likely a rebuilder used a bare 3.1 block to rebuild a 2.8 (crank/piston set were different).
I believe same injectors that are on stock 2.8 should be more than adequate.

Yes, it's outfitted for a Fiero. The man had it in an 87GT after the original engine died. He bought from someone else, not the rebuilder.
The 2.8 injectors won't support much more than 140HP, but I'm hoping that after having them refurbished and flow matched, things should be OK.
Thanks Gall757 and Fierosound.
When I get back to the shop tomorrow, I'm going to look for other numbers on the block.

We could find no numbers on the block. Castings only showed GM and T.
I noticed it had a weighted flywheel so with the crankshaft sensor and knock sensor still being present on the block I opted to pull the pan. It has a neutral balanced flywheel with a weighted flywheel. We'll be pulling the rear main to plasti-gauge it.

I'm guessing you mean a neutral harmonic and a weighted flywheel indicating it's a pre-88 2.8 crank (making this a 2.8 still) I expect there's no reluctor wheel on the crank for the sensor, so the sensors were left just to block the holes.
As I said, someone likely needed a new 2.8 block to rebuilt a Fiero engine and only a later 3.1 core was available.[This message has been edited by fierosound (edited 05-10-2020).]

There was a reluctor wheel on the crankshaft. The last owner of the engine has told me that he didn't have any vibrations that he noticed.
As best as I've been able to determine, the engine is a 3.1 from a W body FWD vehicle. Those were used in the late '80s and early '90s.
Pistons looked very good with a bore scope. Very little buildup on the tops and the undersides were super clean. We could identify H5611 on the top of the pistons, but so far we haven't been able to determine manufacture or specs of those pistons. "H" indicates it's a hypereutectic piston. I've found Sealed Power pistons with H562* with * being an alpha notation.

In 1989 and 1990, Chevrolet and Pontiac offered a 3.1 turbocharged engine in very low volume....I can imagine the turbo failing at some point, and the engine or short block being re-used.

I once considered getting a turbo 3.1 from a wrecked Grand Prix GTP, but just never got up the courage to discuss it with the wife.
