There has got to be a way to go faster than 80 MPH (Page 1/2) |

I refuse to believe that the 86 SE 4Speed can't go any faster than 80. There's no way. I reach 80 in 3rd gear and I've still got RPMs to spare. Is there a governor? If so, is it possible to bypass the thing? I don't know enough about the Fiero ECM to know if it has a limiter. I can barely pass anybody on the highway.

My '84 duke (with a transplanted 5-spd Isuzu) has absolutely no problem getting to 100 mph. I suspect your 2.8 isn't running 100%.

I really hope you aren't just referring to the speedometer

Check the speedometer against a GPS. My 84 SE 4 cylinder 3 speed auto maxed out at 94mph on Michigan International Speedway, when the speedometer was reading just over 100mph

I'll test again tonight with a gps, it just felt so weird. Like it was refusing to go past 80.

Do you have an old catalytic converter? Have you checked fuel pressure?[This message has been edited by Gall757 (edited 04-24-2020).]

I replaced the cat recently, and I haven't tested fuel pressure but I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of the problem since I've been fixing fuel leaks for the past week

have you tried cleaning the crap out from under the gas pedal..? (Sorry, I just had to..)
I have had my 85 SE V6 4 spd up to 110- that was back around 1987....Now, with a 5 spd and 3.4 block, I could probably go faster, but I am into "G's" not speed....

35 years ago, my factory stock 84 SE 2.5L 4 speed topped out at 105 mph; referenced to a mph chart extrapolated from the RPMs. [This message has been edited by David Hambleton (edited 04-24-2020).]
