86 gt 2.8 4 speed So I think I found a F23 getrag today in a cavalier. I know this will work in a fiero with slight modding. My question is what will I need for to do the swap. Iโm getting real tired of the whole 70 mph at 4000 rpms lol. 80 mph is around 4300-4500 rpm now i see why the 2.8 wears out so quick. Thing was never designed to be revving that high for such long distance.

On an 86 GT 4-speed, the engine will be turning about 3300 RPM at 80 mph... so I don't know where you came up with 4300-4500.
Perhaps your tachometer is reading off?

I agree with pontiacfierokid1985 re the high RPMs. It's not 4000 but it is up around 3000 and on the highway that's just noisy and tiring. My old 4 cyl 5 speed ran around 2200 rpm at 70 and was a pleasure to drive at speed. The v6, not so much! I'de be interested in knowing what's need to swap boxes. I have a 5 speed shift leaver I've been saving for the job if I ever get around to it.
------------------ Anything I might say is probably worth what you paid for it, so treat it accordingly!

probably should consider an engine swap with the trans itt mounts need to be made and custom cables or axles ordered or something

Then itโs definitely the tach is off cause when doing 80 this thing is revving all the way to 4000 rpm. Itโs doing 3000 rpm at 55 mph you thinking a new tach filter is needed ???? Or is the gauge reading wrong? And I was to do a 5 speed swap I think I would be better finding one from a late 86-88 fiero since that will have everything to just swap right over to a older 86. I just wish this one I bought was a late model 86 ๐คฆโโ๏ธ But it came up for a steal to get so had to hop on it ๐

Tach goes bad with age and starts reading higher and higher Soon she'll be redlining.
Get the tach repaired, then reassess the need for a new tranny.

Buying a "cheap" car only to spend money modifying it to your liking doesn't normally make economic sense vs. just spending more on initial purchase to get what you want... but that's your choice.
I think a bad tach filter would cause a jumpy needle, not a constantly high reading. Therefore, I'd suspect the tachometer gauge itself.
